sbiddle:

Clear if you opt for a Naked VDSL2 install from Snap and have an existing POTS line then Chorus are going to have to perform a connection+wiring install to connect your VDSL2 on the 2nd pair coming into your home, and connect this to a dedicated jackpoint.

Is that only if you want to keep the POTS line? or regardless?

Just ring a provider and ask for a phone line. Don't confuse them by talking about VDSL with Snap etc. Just order the line and then get VDSL put on it. Snap will have no problems doing this. And people can just get the 'POTS breaks VDSL' bull btw.

Edit: And you should get a splitter put in every time. Whether naked or not. Eliminates all the variables that internal wiring can introduce. yes it costs a couple of dollars but a $150 one off cost is not much in return for 50Mb/s DSL.

If you have an existing POTS like then that is the only option. If you don't want to keep your POTS line you will obviously need to cancel this first.

So I placed an order on Saturday night with Snap and I decided to do a little more investigating to check my line will be up to scratch for VDSL.

From my house to the cabinet is about 80m (straight down the street) so adding a bit extra to get from the road to the demarc and then inside, I figure it's in the 110-130m range all up. The building I'm in is about 7 years old and inside has 3 phone jacks.

The first jack in the house has the cable that runs from the demarc plus two other leads heading off to two other jacks.

If I want to get the best out of my line can I just disconnect those other two jacks? I'm not using them anyway, I just run the one modem. Even if I do disconnect those extra jacks would I still benefit from using a master filter?

You should disconnect the other two jacks to eliminate issues from reflections. There will be no need for a master filter if you do this as your modem will essentially be hooked up directly from the demarc.

Because your wiring is also running from the central jackpoint and not in series you could easily upgrade the other jackpoints to RJ45's and then have Ethernet running around your house if needed.

I'm just looking at the PDL modules now :P! Thanks for the tip, would definitely be handy. I didn't realise the cables were the same until I took it out of the wall.

+1 to this, great advise, and it will make a noticeable difference in sync speed.

My VDSL was at 30 Down / 8 Up before I disconnected 2 daisy chained jack points, now its at 48 Down / 10 Up.

I don't quite understand.  Why would disconnecting jacks which have nothing connected to them (ie; open circuit) will make any difference?

It's not the jack but the wire. Shout into a cave and you get an echo. Same from an unterminated wire.

These extra jackpoints are in effect bridged taps / stubs that cause signal reflections. Rather than just repeat all of this again you might want to read back through all the other posts in this thread.

The simple reality is NO xDSL install should ever exist without a master filter. If I ran Chorus I would refuse to ever send a tech to a site to investigate speed or performance issues unless the customer had a master filter installed. Every xDSL install should be a mandatory conenction+wiring filter install if it's not already present.

Thanks for the info guys, I feel more educated already :)

That said, my soon-to-be ISP seems to think that this will not be an issue (I re-confirmed with a second person there today). Also, they have said that in their experience master filters / splitters tend to cause more problems than they fix...

Wow. Might be time to look for another new ISP, hard to believe anybody would tell such rubbish.
