I see your point there mate, yes you seem to have 2degrees CSC. :) I am not sure about the update but theoretically yes, you will need to wait for the update that matches your current firmware.

According to my humble knowledge about the subject, what you've mentioned is true, the only accepted way (by warranty) to upgrade firmwares is through Kies or using the "Update" menu item in your phone, but the service provider has to send Samsung their version of the firmware first (they need to include their CSC) then Samsung adds it to their Kies ROM server(s).

2degrees for example needs to adjust a firmware to support Touch2Pay using snapper enabled sim card, and so, each provider needs to add their own set of services and apps.

Yes you need to wait for 2Degrees / Samsung updates for your handset

Thanks @menabassily. I wish I'd known this issue with CSC & such before I bought the phone. I would have just bought the phone from the Vodafone Store just to keep things simple.

If you are comfortable with flashing your phone, and you don't have any legal terms or conditions forbidding you from doing so, then this might help you out:
[How to] Download/Backup your samsung stock firmware from Samsung servers including your provider packages

Using this method you can get the stock Vodafone firmware and flash it, then you will have the Vodafone stock firmware and CSC. Personally I would wait until I see which company gets the Jelly bean update first, then decide.

I will have to stay stock with 2degrees firmwares unfortunately, otherwise I will lose my touch2pay features.

Don't know about the warranty, but I know for sure that you don't need to root the phone for this method to work.

So if I was going to flash another stock firmware on it, I suppose I could put a UK vodafone firmware on it since the UK vodafone firmware has been updated twice instead of the new zealand one? I'm assuming that as long as the PDA & Phone are the same as the firmware I download, it shouldn't brick my phone right?

Very good point there. Thats something to be very careful about that the firmware doesnt lock you to the telco provider of the rom..

Lol .. good point... that would be so ironic being completely locked out in my attempts to get free :)... At this point, I'll just wait since I don't want to void my warranty. Besides, there are no stable jelly bean roms out there anyway for GS3. The situation that I'm in is a little silly. I'm on vodafone & I bought a brand new phone from a proper retailer (Dick Smith) but has a 2Degrees CSC which I didn't know at the time or how it would affect me. But now, I can't get complete support from Vodafone because it has a 2degrees CSC & I have to wait for 2Degrees to update stuff and I can't call 2Degrees at all since I'm not their customer. I'm stuck in between without full support from either carrier which is a bad situation to be in 3 weeks after purchasing a phone! :)

This whole CSC nonsense has to change. If we change carriers, there should be an official way without voiding warranty for us (if we choose to) to be able to put the respective carrier CSC on the phone so that it can be fully supported by the carrier.

John, I understand. But the issue is that these are "respectable" retailers, not your small parallel import shops that are selling phones by saying that it is "supported" on the vodafone network. Yes, you can say that it works on the network, therefore it's supported but it's very confusing for customers. If they had told me that it wasn't supported, I would have walked another 10 meters to a vodafone store and bought the phone. The issue is that it is NOT clear when making the purchase especially for people who are new to the Android world. I'm sure you are going to get a lot more calls from people wondering why they aren't getting updates etc when the vodafone forums say that the update is already out. Now that I know, I won't be making the same mistake and will be making people aware of the issues of being on the Vodafone network and not buying their phones from the Vodafone store!
