At least this will allow people to replace the orcon device with something good.

enozkeeg:
...There are implications for them to pro actively offer a SIP service...

Such as?

Support... people WILL expect them to fix issues even if its ultimately the byod unit at fault.
Reputation... People will complain to others and on forums about a poor service even if it's the byod.
What if you muck up your settings and dial plan and 111 doesn't work for your mom. Orcon doesn't need bad press for that.

I could go on. They provide a managed POTs replacement, not a 'SiP service'.

There are providers out there who do provide a 'SIP service'.

ive known about this for a while but never bothered to test it.

I do have a couple of questions which perhaps you can help out with

1) can you connect from any IP such as vodafone cell or does it have to be from an orcon IP
2) can you have both genius and another device connected at the same time?

1) No. Only a Orcon IP address that is attached to a Genius account (see http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=82&topicid=108690

2) No. Due to the way SIP works, you can't without a second account (and I dont think Orcon offers this). Other VOIP providers like 2talk offer the option of several SIP accounts attached to a single phone number, but the Orcon Genius offering is kept simple to suit the mass-market

Actually, this has got me thinking. Can anyone confirm that an Orcon 3G USB modem does support VoIP when plugged into the Genius and used in 3G fall-back mode?
