Graymond: would appear that Vodafone offer Data services as a secondary service away from the main populated centres. Are customers advised of this??

Guess you have never been to Christmas in the park in Auckland Domain which is in Auckland CBD

Auckland is New Zealand's biggest city and you still get congestion during major events,

You can also add Ohakune to the list nearly every weekend in the winter when the population at least quadrupoles.

Dion

Good news Ohakune went Dual carrier about 3 weeks ago which will help,

I don't work in the NMC team and they have done checks, I spoke to them this morning

Ok, thanks. I wanted to make sure that a possible issue wasn't passed off as overloading.

As a Vodafone customer I'm pretty disappointed - we've never had this sort of throttling before at New Years, and I've never seen it done for so long without a break.

Fortunately, I don't need mobile Internet right now, I was only checking as I thought my phone had borked itself somehow, so I'll forget about it and go outside...hopefully things will be back to rights soon.

Graymond the thing to understand is any mobile network does not have unlimited capacity and the capacity that is offered today will be very different in 12 months time, I see the work that goes on thru the year and it's not static by any means,

Carriers spend millions and millions each year increasing speed / coverage / capacity but the the budget is only so big and that is not unlimited either,

Serious question John, would a COW help with the OP's problem? Is this location a holiday hotspot? (I'm not too familiar with it).

johnr: Twizel is a small place and that 3G site has over 8 X times the normal traffic load on it during Christmas / New Years

Was there over Christmas and I must say that the performance was fine however signal strength is average in average in twizel township , has twizel gone dual carrier?
Fyi I notice that Vodafone only have one cell in the twizel where as telecom has one in twizel township which really helps with reception especially indoors, co-location opportunity?

Yes indeed I do have a Telecom XT 'T' stick with no problems from the same Rotoiti location.
I find some of the comments typical of those that should know better.
The fact that I am a 2Degrees customer currently being connected via Vodafone how can 2degrees be responsible for a failing on the Vodafone system, and I agree with the other person from this area who queries the blocking of data, because that is what it is, the excuse of blaming system overload is an easy cop-out, are we to accept that Vodafone in this area are having 48 hour overload, bollocks, we are not all stupid.

Graymond are you calling me a liar now? I am on Holiday and took some of own time to get the cell site checked out for you even though you are not Vodafone customer!

I rung in our NMC (network management centre) this is manned 24/7 by people I personally know thru work and spoke to Nina, I asked Nina to do some checks on the Rotoiti cell site in Rotorua, This took her approx 5 - 7 minutes and the alarms coming off the site were major congestion alarms for packet switch data.

Graymond I am a Systems Engineer myself in Vodafone, Started with them April 2000 and been very active here on Geekzone must be coming up approx 10 years now

As I have already advised data is not blocked or disabled on this cell site

There is an easy way to solve this.  Do a test at 3am still having issues then I agree there is more than just a congestion problem.  I would say its not actually the tower but backhaul will be shared and it won't have the capacity.

As advised by the others, if you want to lodge a complaint, talk to 2Degrees in the first instance.
If you were in the USA as a Vodafone customer roaming on AT&T (for example) and you had an issue, who do you think you would call first? Who are you paying for the service, AT&T or Vodafone? Think of it like that.
