It was even worse when the outgoing route was going over cogent... so it's curious you're still having such significant issues. It may be that you've got some level of packet loss normally.

Those high pings to the first hop are confusing, but normal. I've seen them be 8 seconds plus...

Its hard to believe it is the game servers, at 10pm last night there was still significant lag, and as I said friends of mine were having no in-game issues - they are on Telecom though. Last time when this was happening, a friend on Orcon I spoke to didn't have any slowness and he is a big downloader.

I'm not an expert, but the sudden slowness I'm experiencing (over the last five nights), and the previous time this happened make me really think it is an issue on the NZ side.

I never thought I would say this but if my friends at Telecom aren't having issues then I may as well change to them.

If there was someone else on my cabinet using massive amounts of traffic, would that impact my experience?

I think the next test I will do is go to my parents place a few blocks away and test there telecom connection (by playing my game), then change their router to my orcon account and run the same test using orcon. At least that would rule out cabinet issues.

orcon and telecom logins won't work on the same connection.

as long as you're using euba local congestion shouldn't be significant. you can tell if you're using euba on orcon now, because it'll come up euba bng.. it used to just come up with bng, i don't know if the non-euba connections have been migrated to bng yet or not.

This won't work as the connection is a Telecom one, not Orcon. It's not like the dialup days where you could connect to any ISP, xDSL is a QinQ VLAN tunnel back to your specific ISP.

This won't work as the connection is a Telecom one, not Orcon. It's not like the dialup days where you could connect to any ISP, xDSL is a QinQ VLAN tunnel back to your specific ISP.

well dialup days you had to dial different phone number, it was early adsl days with jetstart/jetstream where you could just change logins.

I noticed your original traceroute showed massive spikes in latency on your first HOP ourside your network, Theres several things that could cause this....

1.) Saturation of downstream
2.) Saturation of upstream
3.) Orcon Congestion (However with 2000+ms latency there would be a large number of people complaining here of the same thing so I doubt this is the case)
4.) Cabinet Congestion (usually common only these days with Conklin cabinets in the wop wops....)

Test again make sure there is no application using your internet connection connect with Ethernet Disable wireless (if enabled) and test again.

99% of speed issues actually turn out to customers saturating their upstream. if its a Orcon problem suddenly your not the only one affected 1000+ users affected and this forum becomes very active with people reporting the same thing.

10 years ago this worked because the architecture of DSL in NZ was very different.

With EUBA now it's a full end to end VPN tunnel between your ISAM port and your ISP delivered using QinQ, it's impossible for this to work.

Last time I had this issue I unplugged everything from my modem and plugged my laptop directly into it. I turned off the wireless on it and it all made no difference to what I was experiencing. Its a real pain to go through as I have a dual band router plugged into my modem that I use to controll my home network, so I have to faf around with all the settings each time I do that test. I also know its not my modem as I tried three different ones (different makes and models) last time and it made no difference.

Last time this happened I figured I must've been thrown in with all the unlimited clients, as it was exactly what I saw when I was on Slingshot and Telecoms plan in the past. But I pay per gb for full speed data, so I shouldn't experience any shaping or throttling.

It isn't just my gaming that is affected, international browsing is definitely slower. The funny thing is, in the speedtests I ran, the upload was faster than the download.

I wonder if it is cabinet congestion, I'm not quite in the wop wops, just in Papamoa (Tauranga).

What really Orcon have de-prioritised IMCP.... wow that's going to cause issues with troubleshooting and potentially other issues.
I wonder if this is a DDOS protection.....

Well the next option would be do a TCP ping on say port 80 to Orcon's website.

their routers deprioritised icmp for their own responses for ages.

it's just their bras is extra reluctant to reply to icmp-echo with too short distance in a timely fashion.

for normal ping packets in/out, they seem to be better than syn/synack response times.

if you've got a linux box you can do:

hping3 -S -p 443 www.google.co.nz

to try tcp pings...

and i think it's probably traffic management stuff that's slowing down the syn/synack stuff.
