No.  I would prefer my ISP do no filtering because I believe my AV client can do an equally good job of spam detection but I have total control as to how spam is managed.

IMHO the attraction of ISP-mediated spam detection dates back to the days of dialup when download speed was extremely limited and it was therefore desirable to eliminate spam from the email-download process.  Suffering the loss of false positives might have been worth it overall.  Technology has moved on a lot since then.

ISP-mediated spam detection would probably appeal to those of us unable to understand how their AV spam detection works (or have none).

Currently we use the settings set by the customer and either mark it as spam or delete it.

If you mean the dropping of spam before it enters the scanners, Orcon has never done that. I have in other places I've worked.


I think there has been some confusion going on here, I do realise that the topic is related to Orcon's spam filter, but if you look near the start of the topic I was refering to what Vodafone do with their spam filter wher all the spam just vanishes from the face of the earth. BTW I would more than welcome a comment from someone at vodafone to confirm or deny this

Ah sorry i didnt even relate it to vodafone. My guess would be its not stored anywhere, or if it is, its for a short period.
But i have no proof and its a guess.

I can really only state fact for Orcon.

@oldgeek. I will have to look and see if not scanning at all for a single user is going to be sensible. Ill let you know.

Opt out is still valid and will be available going forward.
This is a long piece of work so as it is happening i will post updates here. Probably in a new Thread.

We are also doing a major storage change with mail at the moment, this entails moving all mail boxes over a period of several months to new storage.
The process of moving them has a period where mail can appear to be lost, its not, it just so happens that the user has accessed the mail box between it being copied and the databases responsible for knowing which storage your mailbox is on being updated.

Usually it will be rectified in 5 minutes or so, if its not then let us know.

Has anyone noticed any problems since this new spam filtering came in? I have noticed tonight that emails aren't arriving in my account til 3-4 hours after they are sent.

This goes through the system we are replacing, and this is a very good example of why we are replacing it.
We are looking at where its being marked incorrectly but this may not be a quick fix i am afraid.

OldGeek: My experience of ISP filtering of Spam email traffic is not positive and I don't use it.  This is primarily because emails that are classed as Spam by the ISPs filter are never presented for download to a client like OE/Outlook etc.  You have to use the ISPs webmail app to find them and deal with false positives.

In contrast almost all good AV software offers Spam detection.  All emails are downloaded to the client and then analysed.  Filters can be used to identify what the AV software declares as Spam and therefore dealing with false positives is vastly easier and faster.


The problem I have with client side filtering is that it's not really optimal with multi-device setups, especially mobile ones. Same thing with server side rules.

Will it be rolled out to business hosting instead of D2S? D2S is ok, but has had some problems in the past and it is looking a bit old. Currently emails filtered by it can get delayed by about 5 minutes, so incoming email isn't instant.

I dont see why not, the same product was a bizo offering under the name eguard.

At a technical level it is our intent to cease using D2S.
