Dial down to off which is what I saw at my sisters. a magnet link wouldnt even get a connection to download the actual torrent file in a 5 min period. Same thing happens instantly on my snap connection.

DHT seems much lower on peers as well. In the 200s vs the 400's I normally see here

I read that post I think that post had a little too much information..... stuff they don't want you to know about.
As a network engineer myself that post told me allot of how their network is configured, Funny enough thats standard in New Zealand these days.

Point to note that DDOS attacks are happening allot these days I personally have noticed an increase over the past 2 months I saw one not so long ago that was in the excess of 2gibt....Say if you have 4gig of traffic and you get a 2gig DDOS suddenly normal traffic is reduced by 50%

I read that post I think that post had a little too much information..... stuff they don't want you to know about.
To the customer you might think that's valuable information but what I read its very interesting and if I was orcon I would not like that to be posted.... it needs to go though Marketing to Dumb it down and simplify.


This is a problem of attitudes.  To me, I'd rather they were transparent :)  It's not like it changes the level of service that is received, it's just about visibility.

What was in that post told me they have limited bandwidth and If I was a nasty person I would take little effort for me to make things worse and slower....

I know Orcon is not the only ISP getting DDOS attacks....

For those who don't know:
DDOS = Distributed Denial Of service. (Many Sources or Many Destinations)
DOS = Denial Of service (Single Source or Single Destination)
LOL = Laugh Out Loud.... :-P

dude NZ ISP's getting ddosed in an age old problem... bandwidth much more plentiful in some other regions.

it's meant to be one of the main reasons for poor china internet btw.

Hi all,
Sorry for the lack of updates, I was hoping to wait until I had some fixed dates, but don't at this stage.
Still, it's def worth an update. There's been a number of things that have impacted on performance of late. Three to note:

- DDoS: as mentioned above
- Capacity: We purchased more bandwidth last week, but it's still not enough, we have an order in for more, and hopefully it will be in place very soon (as per above, I don't have a def date at the moment)   
- Sandvine: we had a couple of issues lately that caused performance to degrade. These have been fixed, and we are working on ensuring it's robust moving forward.

In the meantime, we have dialled back P2P in the evenings while waiting for bandwidth.

Rest assured, it's in our interests to make sure that our customers are happy with the performance, and will be working hard to get it back to where it should be.

Thanks all, and apologies for the lack of updates here, we really do value the Geekzone community!

So... Are we going to get any compensation for this garbage internet that we've had for a month or so?
It's been appallingly slow, better now than it was... but still not right.
Also, when you say 'dialled back P2P'  Don't you mean, crippled it? goes from 2-3MB/s to 10KB/s...

Perhaps they need to invest in some gear for there infrastructure to avoid this. What's the point of getting more bandwidth if its going to run out on the next DDOS?

Mmm hopefully they are looking at a long term fix for all the down time we are having. And yeah about the compensation comment above I doubt that would happen haha.

Signing a contract with an ISP is obviously a bad idea, but surely consumer laws should protect subscribers when the ISP is not delivering the service the subscriber is paying for?

Measuring the service delivered vs. paid for would be hard in this case, but Orcon should give customers the option to move, without penalty, if they admit service problems has been ongoing for the last month or even longer.

International speeds have been so slow that online gaming is impossible, and when you have two teens moaning in your ears about it, moving to a different ISP, even if it means paying the penalty, must be considered to avoid insanity Foot in Mouth

As for the DDoS', it is a hard problem to deal with, but ultimately is a risk the ISP gets paid to deal with.
