Viscery: Been having some bad experiences the last couple nights after 10-11pm, speedtest just to auckland running at 1 mpbs not sure if my own line fault or something to do with orcon? It isn't slow the entire night, just spikes after 10pm.

jitter of 60 msec or so to los angeles :/

seems 80, and worst at 9:30.  extra bad the last two nights.

although san jose is fine.  and the los angeles to san jose host is fine.

actually it's only starting to get bad tonight.  it hasn't reached it's full badness.

If you are having speedtest issues to Auckland then its not an international issue.

I've noticed later in the evenings that speeds, even locally, tank down to sub mbit levels. Very annoying.

What area you in?

Not a international issue if its local traffic also.

All weekend was slow on Youtube. Stopping halfway through and taking 60 sec to start, generally poor.

I am another not so happy Orcon fibre customer, I am on a basic fibre unlimited plan, my internet starts to go down the toilet at night and in the morning, my good old copper broadband from slingshot had better performance.

I complained on their facebook and all I get is f***ing standard reply to ring f***ing useless helpdesk who I think are getting high at work. This is such a big contrast to other telco like Skinny and 2degrees, whenever I contact them on facebook I get straight answers or they will get someone to look into it.

I really wonder if anyone at Orcon actually gives a f*** to the sh*t state that company is in at the moment.

My Orcon fibre connection has been rock solid for a couple of months now.  Been getting good speeds day and night.

Have you tried logging a call?

There is nothing wrong with the physical connection, I always get 28mb from speedtest, but the real problem is international traffic.

I don't think they necessarily always manage unlimited plans. With my last speed issues, I overheard the chorus tech talking to their second level support guys and he was told that I was under the normal profile, no shaped profile. I think they just put you in a high users group if you turn out being a high user, not automatically because you are on unlimited.

If your consistently being a high user and breaking their fair use policy you'd be asked to move to another plan (how much data that would take is anybodies guess) and the unlimited plan I think has 24/7 management to deal with on/off peak use

Strange then that he said I was in the normal profile.

Is anyone else getting sub-optimum routing to Singapore?

After performing a trace route, it appears the connection is Going from NZ to the US, then back to Japan, then finally down to Singapore.
It is causing horrible ping and packet loss to game servers based in Singapore. While running PingPlotter, the US link (CogentCo) was often showing 10-20% packet loss.

There has been occasional times where the ping has been good around 150 as opposed to 240~280 and my guess is the connection is routed via Australia, however I don't have any trace routes or PingPlotter data to confirm this.

I'm just wondering what could be the cause of this sub optimum routing?

I'm just guessing this is due to the BGP route selection. Going via CogentCo then Singtel (with the specific server being hosted by Singtel) results in a shorter AS path than going via Australia (Just a guess?).

Here is the results of my trace route if it helps.

most likely the cause is that they just don't have a better route available because they dropped telstraclear and took on globalgateway, and so as a consequence their Asia performance will be worse.

as a general rule, telstraclear -> pacnet -> global gateway > vocus for asia connectivity.

afaik they were using pacnet then they changed to global gateway then they changed to telstraclear then they changed to global gateway then they added vocus.  although at some point in time they seemed to try vocus for some things for a while and congest it massively.

I'm just guessing this is due to the BGP route selection. Going via CogentCo then Singtel (with the specific server being hosted by Singtel) results in a shorter AS path than going via Australia (Just a guess?).

AS path alone really can't create good routing paths.  Singtel are actually one of the worst offenders.  Their traffic is likely to have a shorter AS path via the US than via Australia, so a provider would have to make the as-paths longer for US based transit providers to singtel, and lower for any Asia/Australia learned routes from them.  Although if going through someone else this may be difficult to do, as they may only receive US based routes, and a lot of smaller providers don't do much in the way of route optimisation, as it means lots of special cases, complications etc..

As a result asia traffic tends to suffer.  Starcraft's singapore servers tend to be a bit better, but if you look at a range of singapore sites I imagine you'll find some with low latency and some with high.  Some may even have over 300 msec pings.

Here is the results of my trace route if it helps.
