The reason I haven't signed up for fibre is that there is no fibre in my area, not even VDSL. If fibre was running down my street I would sign up.

It's changed:

UFB development dates for your are are still being developed.

Could be a good thing, there's fibre 10 houses away :-/

Singapore is a different beast in that it's a nation of high-rise MDUs and deployment per premise is relatively cheap.

We've got fibre-to-the-basement live in a number of MDUs in the regions we operate in, which drives pricing down.

So keeping in mind the open access of UFB in NZ and uniform wholesale pricing, very keen to see what MyRepublic bring to the table :)

So since they announced they were coming here, the market has again steadily improved. We can get unlimited fast fibre across multiple ISPs.

What will they do? A race to the bottom isn't going to get a company anywhere, so they must have something to bring to the table. I assume global mode or "teleport" as they call it will come along for the ride, but thats already here with 3 different ISPs at least.

Some companies that are in the 'race to the bottom' do it solely to build up a big client database and not to make any money initially. They can however differentiate themselves with better customer service and a more personal service.  They then may sell it to a larger company, which is when they make their money. This then often results in the prices rising.

based on what they do in singapore this is my educated guess/prediction:

  • Unlimited data. (goes without saying really - everyone has it now. if they dont do this they are dead in the water)
  • 100/100 and 200/200 plans - nice and simple (less than that is no different from everyone else)
  • 12 or 24 month contract, free or discounted modem. (pretty normal)
  • Cloud storage from these guys: http://mycloudstore.co.nz/  (they list myrepublic as a partner coming soon)
  • Voip free for short term duration - then chargeable after that for $5/month
  • Global mode (they call it teleport) free for short duration then chargeable for $5/month
  • some kind or priority routing BS for gamers, which wont make much different because most games are in in Oz anyway and everybody routes directly there.

There will be some super cheap bait pricing like $50 or something, which they will aggressively promote, but it will have hidden limitations - like maybe only applies for first 6 months of contract. (the price in singapore almost doubles after the contract ends)

In singapore they also had a laundry list of hidden prices and extras that aren't apparent up front

here are Ts and Cs from singapore

pretty longlist IMHO :)
note that in Singapore they have an early termination fee for people in contract AND a termination fee for those out of contract lol

how much of that stuff is legal over here I don't know. suspect they wont be allowed to do much of that.

No, I'm not going as I am Wellington-based. I replied with my excuses and was told a pack will be sent with more information - which I suspect would get here after the event...

I knew that. Just saw before that you said you "were in transit to Auckland" so thought you might've stayed longer for this.

And based on the earlier statements by MyRepublic people, it doesn't look like there are gonna be much "game changers" here, but we'll see what they announce at the launch party this Thursday! It may just well be me eating all the sausage rolls there! :P

I think the "change the game" comment may be around the "Gamer" service, which (at least in Singapore) offers preferential routing to gaming servers.
