hellonearthisman:
It costs Slingshot nothing for the extra downloads but would still charge you international data rates.
But for Slingshot to publicly host such information for leeching becomes a legal problem/issue,
something about being aware of the content it is hosting... *bull*

I would like to know how to access the proxies.  The rest was a rant about the costs of data waste, i think.

Transparent proxies have not been enforced for a long time now. I still use them when I want to download 5 files at once from rapidshare and to bypass network problems. Those 4 handy proxies are the main reason I stay with them along with price.

Are you saying that one can opt out of the proxies? Last time I tried my slingshot connection, they were just that - transparent with no means of opting out easily.

Are you sure you are on one? Check with online tools like http://www.dslreports.com/whois and report your IP.

And for those who want to know their address would need to do it though PM. Since there's only 4 available between everyone under Callplus the less people know about them the more effective they are.

Hi Guys,

Slingshot Engineer here .. as stated on the SS forums, these are legacy boxes, and usage/connectivity will be restricted shortly.

Using them to "bypass" things doesnt work as the item your trying to bypass is BEFORE the proxies...

Slingshot does not cache/proxy HTTP by default ... this user was manually using the proxies which are soon to be grandfathered afaik.

<Profanity removed> don't shut them down please! They were also very handy when there are network problems as I have discovered that many routing issues were solved by using them.

How many people within Slingshot are aware of their existence? From this thread on the Slingshot forums it seems some of the SS people didn't know they are there.

(Moderator edit (brian) Removed profanity, do not evade swear filter.)

Not to state the blatantly obvious but your aware this is a public forum .. and that thread you posted is one of the main reasons its being properly RQ'd rather than "just left on for grandfathering"

Its not a case of "they dont exist" at all .. its that no traffic was routed there, you had to MANUALLY type them in as proxy addresses so the Slingshot team did respond correctly "THERE ARE NO MANDATORY FILTERING" .... they were refering to it as a standard service, not someone that found a minor loophole, which is soon to be closed.

Cheers,

B

On the thread:
"Slingshot do not have a proxy server <<<<<
Slingshot do not have content filtering"

They need to rephrase that.

Before the proxies are down can you try connect to HardOCP forum
www.hardforum.com? I get timeouts without the proxies.

Yup semantics ....as stated in the context of the question posted by the original user " Does Slingshot have some kind of proxy server with mandatory content filtering? And if not, why am I getting messages about pages being blocked by Slingshot and CallPlus?"
,
Greybeards post was 100% correct ... call the grammar police if you feel the need however your now just clucthing at straws.

HardOCP forums work fine for me I use them from home also with no problem (2meg sync non-interleaved connection with -56db attenuation ..... in otherwords a TERRIBLE line :))

You put your foot in your mouth right after that post, by reminding us to update the access lists to those now grandfathered devices, so in one hand thanks, in another... let it go? ...

Turns out the problem was an old HOST entry that was set in the router back when the DNS was unstable.

Guess I had a good run with proxies, I simply didn't expect SS taff to overlook such a major component that was in their network and thought they were on on purpose.

Ahhhhhh "Major part of our network" sorry mate but caches that have been "grandfathered" (please click on the link).

As most people in a service demand position we removed direct routing to those boxes, and left them on JUST IN CASE we missed something ... hey were humans we make mistakes.... but as stated nothing uses them without manually entering the addresses.

However as stated they are not "major" or even a "minor" part of our network...they are just waiting to be turned off... that is not something you would do to a "major component" as you called it, they are old and very underpowered (imho)

All you and the several posts you've made about it have done is speed up this process.

Good news is tho ... by not relying on a redundant service and actually looking at your own setup you fixed the problem ... which had NOTHING to do with our DNS.....

Cheers,

B

PS - Can someone lock this now redundant topic?

Cheers...

I did use "was" in that sentence.

Just out of curiosity can you see how many people are using them on purpose like me? Surly I can't be the only one among the thousands of SS customers that found out and made use of them. I get "IP in use" on them occasionally from rapidshare so I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Yes you did use "Was" ... however even in their hay-day they were more trouble than they were worth due to the above problem you listed (too many ips from this location). Which is one of a number of reasons they have been grandfathered....

Your right you arent the only one ... nor did I say you were ... but as stated they are being shut down due to not being used/lack of scalability.

You may however be the only one to actualy care about them being shut down .... however you fixed your self caused problem and as stated they are to be RQ'd.
