AidanS:+1. TBH, I think a 50/X plan should have been introduced from the get go. The 30/10 to 100/50 is too big of a jump in both speed and price. The 30/10 is too similar to a good ADSL2+ connection (bar, upload speeds) and the 100/50 speeds are "too" much for the '"average" for the next ~5 years or so.

Fibre 30/10 is a racing car with a 50kph speed governor :)

I remember seeing that all the LFCs were going to offer the 50/20 speed at around same price as 30/10 is currently. But the only ISP to offer 50/20 at the moment is Snap and they sell it for $15 more per month. Hopefully in the near future it will replace 30/10 at the base fibre speed like they announced last year. I agree that 30/10 is barely a step up from 24/1 on ADSL and actually a step down from the maximum VDSL speeds, but for me with 7/1 speeds on ADSL the 30/10 speed will be a decent step up for now and at the same price that i'm currently paying.

I am still undecided on which ISP to choose. I have heard plenty of positive and negative comments about all the different ISPs, so I don't know what to expect. I have seen seen negative comments regarding Orcon which put me off them. Has anyone used them and had a good experience, especially in comparison to Snap? I would love to sign up for fibre ASAP but I would hate to sign a 12-24 month contract and end up having a bad experience.

Sideface: I can't see the point of 30/10 fibre, apart from the better upload speed. If you want fibre, do it right and get a FAST connection :)

My reasons for getting UFB 30/10:
- I want 10Mbps upload to send images to my editor. 2Mbps too long
- I wanted the reliability of the UFB network, including a higher chance it would work in a disaster
- Better routing and lower latency.

I didn't get 100/50 or whatever because I just didn't need it, or even want it. $40 a month would be insignificant, but I didn't pay it because I don't need it.

I have been with Orcon for 6 years (still am), and at one stage had three accounts with them at three different addresses.
I have had no problems whatever with Orcon - my only complaint is that their call center is now in the Philippines - it used to be in Auckland.
Orcon have a 12-month contract
I can't comment about Snap as I've had no experience with them.

bbunnys: My advise is go with Orcon.

I would never recommend anyone going with Orcon. Last time I dealt with them the resolution to our problem was always 3 days away and nobody knew what the hell was going on.

Snap has been good in my experience, but they might be having growing pains. Orcon might want to move their call center back to NZ and get it sorted from my experience and the horror stories I have read.

I doubt any of the ISPs get away with 100% happy customers. But it might pay to stay away from the ones with the most complaints.

How often do you actually get use for the speed? Most of the services I access are in the US and I seldom see anyone having better speeds over the ocean than I have with VDSL.

Even worse with the work stuff I do in Europe.

Its nice to have a powerful car or fiber. And Fiber usually means more stable connection and better ping times. But you won't get more out of it than the weakest link to what you are going to use.

So with a powerful car: If you are just driving in town or in a city with 50 Km/h speed limit - you are never going to get any use of the big engine of your super sports car. Same with Fiber if you are accessing things that won't give you a high enough speed down the line.

I agree with all of your points, but I need a "super sports car"...
I am a heavy duty SOHO user who transfers large files to and from (fast) servers in LA and London using high speed (130/10) cable (not UFB).
Typical monthly usage is 600GB.
For normal Internet surfing I don't need cable - but for data transfer I do - using multiple simultaneous downloads I often get 100Mbps down, 10 up.

I'm still not 100% sure but we will most likely go ahead and sign up for Snap 30/10 with 200GB data for $90. I have heard nothing but positive feedback from Snap users and all the other ISPs offerings at around $90/month have data caps of <100GB. Telecom (which is finally offering UFB in Christchurch) is $95 for 80GB and Orcon is $85 for 80GB. The only ISP which offers as good or better value is Ubergroup in Whangarei which offers 150GB for $79 at 50/20, expect they only offer services on Northpower LFC which is a shame!

And for the record I'm on 50/20 and our usage hasn't changed. And we watch a lot of online TV

Hi,

I have the 50/20 plan with Snap. I had a very unusual install that took a while to get started, but once some chorus issues were sorted it was all go and Snap were / are great.
