Oddball: Last time it resulted in a bricked router for whatever reason and no internet for four days. My flatmates wont risk it and they shouldn't have to, however small that risk is. I shouldn't be penalized for a fault in Orcon's mandatory hardware.


I have upgraded literally thousands of modems.  Somewhere around 2% require a reboot after the operation.  Perhaps two or three out of a thousand require another modem sent out, and in most cases it is due to power interruption during the upgrade.  We upgrade them in the field routinely, as they are managed devices.

There are no security changes from the build which is compatible with Teamspeak to the latest build, the changes made were to support 100Mbps fibre at line speed.  For ADSL and 30/10 UFB there is no difference at all between the firmwares.

Nevertheless I will see if we can do anything to help you out, without remotely downgrading your modem.  Stay tuned.

It is generally the case that if a firmware update is interrupted almost all devices will be bricked (that's an IT industry term, not an Orcon term), unfortunate that it happened but these updates happen 100's of times daily across our networks and we have a tiny issue rate resulting.

I'm sure if we can arrange to have the update done while the device is attended so not interrupted by anyone it will be fine.

I'll talk to the flatmates again and show them your responses so they can make an informed decision as to whether they'll accept a rollback. If the risk is really that low and there was an interruption then it should be fine, but they'll be reluctant on past experience either way. It was insinuated or misinterpreted (if what you say is true) via PM that re-contracting was my only option.

Failing their compliance, what exactly is the rental charge if we don't re-contract?

I think there is some misinterpretation here. There WAS an interruption, software updates do not brick devices without the device itself being interrupted.
That might have been my mistake there with regards the PM so please accept my apologies if that was how I came across. As FireEngine has said there are multiple options available to you.

Talked to the flatmates, they're ok with it if you don't mind calling my cell while you do it so I can monitor the router? That way short of a power cut there's no way it'll be interrupted. If that's alright then let me know who to PM my #.

Yeah I understand it was interrupted we're just a bit wary because we talked about it and doesn't seem like anyone reset it, so it became a concern.
