3G performance will probably benefit within the 4G coverage area as some heavy users move to 4G. You wouldn't want to prioritise 4G over 3G as it is still only available to a smaller subset of subscribers.

well if nothing is done than 4g will be prioriritised over 3g normally anyway, as it has more bandwidth / less latency. so with limited bandwidth availble, especially under times of high load such as during power outages, will there be further degradation to the 3g.

i don't really know, i don't even know if it's backhaul, tower outages, spectrum issues or what. but its' kind of nice to be able to use the net when power goes out.

there was a dual issue last time with vector's outages site going down as well. but it's kind of nice to know how wide spread power outages are, and when it's likely to be back. last time i think it was out for 9 hours and 3g was bad at 8 am still? i expect during "normal operation" there won't be much impact. but then wifi works :)

The 4G runs on different spectrum [1800 MHz], than 3G [900/2100 MHz], so unless the backhaul becomes constrained, the capacity they provide to 4G should in no way reduce the capacity available on the 3G network, in fact other things being equal, performance on the 3G network should be be improved as the traffic on the 3G network should be reduced as some traffic is offloaded to 4G.

ok cool, that's what i needed to know. i expect it's probably gigabit fibre for backhaul to 4g sites in general, so it's more likely to be radio spectrum or not having proper power redundancy everywhere.

now i just have to hope they upgrade the 3g capabilities in my area. i wonder if 3g is being upgraded at the same time as 4g.

it's dark green, but i dunno what it was before. it was working ok when trying it when i didn't need it, just not when i needed it :)

get 4.88 megabit down, 1.71 megabit up, 74 msec ping on speedtest which is perfectly usable. when i tried tethering during power outage it was 700 msec+ (with timeouts for windows ping, i dunno how to make it wait longer)

phone says hsdpa:8, i think that means up to 7.2 megabit. when phones does 14.4 megabit. (but really it's just the extremely latency, web pages not loading etc at times that bugs me)

Unfortunately, that is a fact of life during very high demand - the bandwidth on a cell site is divided and shared, not dedicated to you as it is with a copper pair or fiber.

AT times of high congestion like this (such as camping on new years eve) I have sometimes had more luck forcing my phone into 2G only mode. Yes, it is in theory slower, but if it works, it beats a non-working, faster technology.

I have a 3G modem that lets me set it's band of operation to either 900 3G only, 2100 3G only or both. It is quite interesting that although the 2dm 2100 3G signal is much weaker at my place, I frequently get better speed test results at 2100 than 900 - your phone could be choosing the stronger signal and not the least congested band.

phone says hsdpa:8, i think that means up to 7.2 megabit. when phones does 14.4 megabit. (but really it's just the extremely latency, web pages not loading etc at times that bugs me)

IME, tethering is never exactly speedy. It's better than nothing, but that's about the best that can be said for it. I don't really understand why, given that a smartphone processor easily outguns a $99 DSL router, but still.

Recently added to the 2 Degrees web site re. HTC One M8 4G connection.

* The HTC One (M8) is 4G capable via a simple software upgrade once this has been approved. We expect this to be released in early August 2014¿.

U900 in Hamilton was launched on mid June 2012 (2 years ago). I asked our RF team to look into this and they investigated the Network performance of the U900 and U2100 sectors that are serving in this area and verified there was no degradation or loss of coverage due to any fault on the cellsite at the time you state. Was your device capable of 3G and U900, or was it an ex-XT device eXDee? (deep breath) ;0)

If poss please let us know if you see any other issues with this and pm us the exact location, phone make/model, your number with times and dates so we can look into it.

Hey POB, cheers for checking on that! I had no idea it'd been around so long with such complete coverage. The device is a Nexus 5 D821, so definitely has U900.
I've extremely rarely seen 2G only signal on my phone, and when i do it was because i assumed there might be fringe 2100. Now i know there definitely is U900, i'll pay more attention if my device has trouble getting on 3G in the future.

Been fast and all good otherwise, patiently awaiting for 4G to arrive :D

On a side note, is there a source on what parts of the network are dual carrier capable? is much of hamilton?

"3G boosted" is this dual carrier? And if so, is this just on 4G upgraded sites or other sites too and on both 2100/900 bands?
Got a friend who is looking at shifting to 3G, so keen to know if he'll get DC speeds when on 3G.

3G boosted is UMTS900 as it has a greater coverage area, but seperate to 3G as you need device that is compatible with 900Mhz while all 3G handsets support 2100Mhz
