A question for 2degrees regarding these packs. If I buy these packs on my pay monthly account can I share the data with my partner on prepaid like I do with nz data? I couldn't see any mention on the website/terms

Telstra  Down 6.74  / up 2.55
Optus  Down 6.52 / up 2.16
Vodafone Down  2.88 / up 0.46  ( Did 2 tests here as the first one was under a 1 Meg down.

Where were you? Rural?

I use Vodafone and Optus connections every day, and everywhere I go Vodafone 3G seriously outperforms Optus 3G. My Optus phone is only 3G tho, so I cant compare 4G vs 4G other than to say Vodafone's 4G is great too.

For 2 years I had an iPad on Telstra 3G. Speeds where perfectly acceptable, but nothing notable.

Gold Coast Airport to the middle of  Surfers.   Voda was slow every time.

Sharing never applies while international roaming. The idea is that you set it up and then forget about it. Not so much in Australia now, but you probably don't want to forget about it somewhere it's chewing up data at $10/MB. So we don't allow sharing while roaming. Perhaps that is something we could reconsider for Australia and the 50c/MB countries.

IMO shared is shared. If I have multiple devices I dont see why it should be any different to using a single device as far as roaming goes?

Because, as I said: the idea is to setup sharing and then forget about it. Some customers need a little more hand holding than others when it comes to managing their data use, and we don't really like to get complaints about huge roaming bills run up by accident.

I thought you already had it stop working when the pack ran out? Shouldnt that stop any huge bills?

Only in NZ. You have no option but to pay cash everywhere else but Australia.

So once the roaming pack runs out you revert to casual rates, worry free data doesn't kick in?

I assume that you would get a SMS from 2D saying that your roaming pack is running out??

Not while roaming, no.

I have a prepaid SIM in my iPad with zero credit on it as I have it set up to share data with my iPhone. When I was in the states last week I found that I couldn't use roaming on my iPad, so I guess this must have been because the data sharing is disabled while overseas.

This is a bit of a gotcha, and highlights the need to top up any shared prepaid account in this particular scenario.

I was in Melbourne last weekend. Thanks to this thread I made a beeline to the Yes Optus at Elizabeth St and got the $2/d sim ... then I came home and went back to $16/500Mb/30days skinny or $9 for 2 hrs at the Auckland airport hotel - man that was 100% withdrawal! a tough night without internet - luckily I munched on a burger at the airport McDs and managed to just sleep it out

Has anyone tried the Roamer app (https://roamerapp.com/en/)?  I saw an article about this in the UK Telegraph recently; it seems a good way to remain connected to your NZ number when roaming with a local SIM or WIFI.  Definitely looks worth a try
