LT0D: I had issues with the modem since day one and to be honest, gave up trying to get a solution because snap rep/s never got back to me. So can understand that i am not happy to pay for something that hasnt been right since day one, as far as the phone side of it.

The fritz's had quite a rough patch of firmwares that didnt preform very well at all.

Because of this, many of us use older firmwares.

Having seen the performance of the newer firmwares on fibre, This certainly does seem to be resolved now. It is my understanding Snap have been working hard with AVM to get things sorted.

What exactly did you have issues with on your fritz?

Running the latest update.

Random tone sounds during calls, calls dropping, at it's worse the phone dropped a call 5 times in 30mins, people ringing my cell phone because they thought we were out but in fact home but the calls never rang at our end but they said it was ringing.

I've had fibre at 2 houses, used a number of different phones, tried everything but a different modem. Rang snap to see if i could get a new modem but gave up, when i wasn't getting anywhere with snap. other than them telling me i will have to, effectively buy the new modem at RRP.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Give ralph the info and im sure they can get you sorted, sounds like the firmware is being kept in close arms right now and so you may not be running the latest, but the latest according to AVM.

sounds odd, and likely related to the PPP drops given your phones dropping out - which the firmware will fix.

RalphFromSnap:

Some of the items are quite Fritz specific, we have tuned the Fritz! box to be optimised with NZ UFB and our network, whereas the default firmware is more generic and primarily designed for the European networks. on our new plans (I.E 200Mbps) the default firmware will cause issues, so you need to be running the Snap provided one. Its not as much of a problem on the slower UFB plans.

One thing that I can't stress firmly enough is that Snap's system auto provisions the firmware out to our customers automatically, This is something that our Support staff do through an automatic system - they can't see any passwords, and don't actually have a copy of the firmware themselves. the only way to push this out to the Fritz is for our provisioning system do it.

In short, just for the record our Support staff don't have the Firmware that they can just email or point to you to download, its customised per user and pushed out (Same for the SIP settings)

But answering your question (As yes slightly off track) in most cases using a non-Fritz should be fine, you may just need to consult the vendor to ensure that it meets the UFB product specs if you have issues. One other device we can confirm works fine is the Juniper SRX which we use for Business Customers.

Thanks,
TheRalph

Having seen the improvements myself, absolutely you guys have outdone yourselves!

So...I'm in Christchurch and the UFB provider here is Enable.  Enable and Snap haven't yet finalised how they will deal with higher speed plans, however my call to Snap this morning suggested that those talks would likely be completed within the month.

As I'm currently on UFB 100/50 my thinking is that for an extra $10 a month I'll move to 200/200.  When I talked to the Snap rep about this he said that was fine, however it wouldn't kick in until the arrangements with Enable had been sorted.  When I queried whether I would be charged the extra $10 a month before I was able to actually get the new speeds he said that I would be able to get 200 down straight away and it was just the 200 up part that I couldn't - on this basis, and not wanting to miss out on the $10 extra deal, I said to go ahead and put me on the new plan.

Having thought about this, I have a few questions for Ralph and others here:

1.  Is it correct that from today when my plan is changed that I'll get 200 down - I would have thought until everything is finalised with Enable that I would be on my old plan?

2.  If I go on the new plan today (being just the 200 down and not the 200 up), why should I be charged the extra $10 until the full plan is available - my reasoning on this is that the 200/20 plan would be $20 cheaper than what I am currently on so 200/50 (which is what I would be on from today) should be somewhere between the price of the 200/20 and the 200/200 plans i.e. exactly where I am at the moment - Ralph?

3.  If I go on the new plan today but the new speeds (up and down) are not available in Christchurch until things are sorted with Enable, then when will I start paying the $10 extra and will I be guaranteed of this rate eve if it takes Enable and Snap a few months to sort?

4.  And finally - how do we go about measuring whether we are actually getting the new speeds.  I typically use Speedtest.net, however this only goes up to 100Mbps?  Is there another site people use or will Speedtest.net actually measure past 100Mbps even though the dial/display only shows up to that speed?

I have just signed up with SNAP and went with an open term 30mbps/80GB plan. I wanted to start with a basic plan and in a case I would either need more speed or data move up a tier or two.

The connection has been live for a week and the experience has been great. The speed is more than enough, however I have already started to run out of the data (as expected).

Today, I have called SNAP and asked about the options. To my surprise I was told that basically I have two main options, either move to a $109 Unlimited plan ($34 jump from my current plan) or pay extra $20 and lock myself for 24 month term which I wanted to avoid in the first place (hence I have already paid $99 for this flexibility). I don't mind paying extra $20 for unlimited, however I would like to stay on the open term for which I paid already. Are there any other options?

On a side note, I have just had a look at the alternatives and it seems like Vodafone offers 30mbps/Unlimited for $85 with first month free, skytv benefits and free calls to 5 landline or mobile numbers. The downside is that it is a 12 months contract,  but still looks a lot better than current SNAP offering. Does anyone has any experience with Vodafone (I understand that this may not be the right forum/thread to ask this).

Hi otagolad

1.  Is it correct that from today when my plan is changed that I'll get 200 down - I would have thought until everything is finalised with Enable that I would be on my old plan? We can provision you on 200/20 over Enable today if you want, or wait until until the 200/200 plan is available over Enable early November so you only have 1 plan change - we don't mind which option you choose.

If you move to the 200/20 then there's no difference in base pricing - this is $110 which is the same as the now retired 100/50.

3.  If I go on the new plan today but the new speeds (up and down) are not available in Christchurch until things are sorted with Enable, then when will I start paying the $10 extra and will I be guaranteed of this rate eve if it takes Enable and Snap a few months to sort? Absoutely - we will honour the $10 U/L promo even if the 200/200 plans are not available from Enable (& UFF) before the end of the promo offer - but you would need to have a confirmed order in with us for the 200/200 service before the prom ends 16/11.

4.  And finally - how do we go about measuring whether we are actually getting the new speeds.  I typically use Speedtest.net, however this only goes up to 100Mbps?  Is there another site people use or will Speedtest.net actually measure past 100Mbps even though the dial/display only shows up to that speed? No issues at all - check out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mwaN4tvCywo ;)

Hope this helps

Cheers
Ralph

It's great to know 200/200 is coming. I've check the price, it is $140 for 80G. My 100/50 for 150G is $95 a month. Just wondering how can you get 200/200 from 100/50 by just extra $10? Cheers.

There is a deal on until the 16th November. Sign up for 24 months (excluding 30/10 fibre), and you get a discount on the unlimited plan, equivalent to the base data plan price plus $10.

Hi gocheck

SirHumphreyAppleby is dead right - with any of the new base plans you can add U/L data option for just $10/m extra. We are making this available to all existing customers as well, as long as they re-commit to a new term.

The new 200/20 base plan pricing is $110/m, with the new hero product (200/200) at $140/m for the base plan. So U/L for $120 & $150 respectively.

Cheers
Ralph

So on the phone Snap advised that I would need the 7490 to use the 200/200 plan, I'm on the Chorus network, and reading previously I thought a firmware update would resolve any issues with my older 7390 (Snap sourced).

7390 vs 7490 am I missing out here if I don't take the upgrade? I don't use the Wifi at all and from what I've read that is the key advantage, but then if I need it for 200/200 it may be a decision made.

sounds like a bit of confusion.. maybe ralph can sort it for ya..

as for hardware wise apart from the wireless..

the 7490 has a 600mhz cpu vs the 500mhz in the 7390.

there is a minor difference in flash configuration and ROM allocations which could be an issue if you wish to use Freetz - but if your running snaps firmware anyway, which you should for ufb, i see this as a nullissue.

7490 is a strong device, however the 7390 preforms well even on 200/200

i have seen no mention of the 7490 being required until now.

Hi gocheck - I'm currently on 100/50 Unlimited ($139) and will be on 200/200 Unlimited at $149 - for $120 per annum above what I'm already paying I think its a fantastic deal.

I'd be just as happy with a 150G cap, but for the same price I guess unlimited is the option. Unlimited Youtube and nights has always killed my need for any more than 150 a month.
