NonprayingMantis: How much of that is down to Akamai/Apple servers etc being overloaded,  vs stuff within your control?

It is demand-driven and additional demand to normal traffic so at peak times there is a likelihood of local network congestion. Unfortunately Apple don't take much action to spread this load.

sDew: 16gb is getting really frustrating now 32gb should be the minimum.
Spread the word, don't get a 16gb ipad, iphone or ipod

If you use itunes on the PC, it possible may not need all that free space. But APple shouldn't be selling this new device with just 16gb of space. 32 minimum, but they don't appear to sell a 32gb model for some reason, just 64gb and up. Just doesn't make sense, unless they don't anyone to buy a 16GB one. I am guessing it is marketing, as if they had a 32GB one as teh lowest version, then less people would buy the 64gb one, which they can charge a premium for. The price difference is almost purely profit.

Local being the ISP? or Local being local exchange/cabinet?

Pretty sure "the internet" is more than resilient enough to handle serving a 1GB download - even to millions of devices. With timezone differences you will see that load spread anyway.

If Apple cheap out and don't provide bandwidth/CDN hosting it I could see an issue, but otherwise a non event.

Why would this be an issue?

Clever marketing strikes again

Why offer a mid-tier option with less profit margin, when you can tempt the 0-dayers straight to the big brother with less production costs than making 3 models, yet only a few additional flash chips added (if any are even added, and not just factory disabled)

A GB is quite a lot of data espeically if everyone is doing it at the same time. Also many people have multiple ios devices, that is multiple of 1GB of data. Compare it to our roading system, you don't build roads to cope with everyone driving on the same road at the same time.

Because networks generally aren't built to provide headroom for once a year peaks - especially when the peaks are pretty big

Not so much, users tend to update when iOS tells them there is an update, Apple controls the timing of this and enables the update for millions of devices simultaneously, human behaviour then compresses that for NZ into a small space of already peak evening time.

Bee: Problem:  IOS 8 requires 1.1GB to be downloaded over wifi only.  Spark free wifi offers 1GB per day...

I *Could* use my home broadband connection but since its a work phone - no.

I think you can pause the update half way and then resume if you need (want?) to spread it across 2 days

iOS 8 release is like trying to drive to eden park just before an ABs game.

Again, I call rubbish. I can forsee issues at the node (joe user with 5 devices on 1 20Mb VDSL connection) but otherwise - woop dee doo - 1GB. What do you think daily torrent/youtube/netflix throughput is?

I think you are massively underestimating connectivity, or massively overestimating the impact this will have.

Am I also correct in assuming you have to click go to download on non-wifi? In which case time zone will make a difference - unless joe is up at 1AM watching for it (which will happen I know, but not for everyone).

You might call rubbish...

As someone partly responsible for the capacity planning for the largest (I suspect) Akamai nodes in the country, I think _YOU_ are massively underestimating the impact. In fact, I am watching graphs for Akamai right now and it's a LOT busier than usual.

Cheers - N
