CeeGee: So, having called Snap and had them take me through basic  set up, decided the modem was fine and to log a fault with Chorus.  Chorus of course were rather busy as it wasn't just me with a problem  several calls and three days later, with Chorus working their way down the fault line to my door, they fix several things and then confirm the box Snap said was fine was cooked.

So, replacement non Snap box & things are back up and running.  And no, Snap cannot sell me a new box thanks - won't buy off someone who insisted the old one was working when it was not.  They need to know the limits of their ability to remote diagnose.

Thanks for the suggestions here team, as always its nice to know people are willing to share their expertise and experience

Charlie

so you tried a new modem and it worked?

is your fritz under contract still? likely snap will happily replace it for you.

Snap are official distributors for fritzboxes, and do outright sell fritzs if you ask in the right places.

would have thought Snap would replace it , i bought one of the very first Fritzboxes when Snap started selling them and when they thought mine was cooked they said they would replace it free of charge and this was a month or so ago . Have you asked them.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Just a quick fyi, VDSL settings on a fritz work on ADSL (and the same jack on the back of the fritz) this means you can test the fritz by going to anyone's house (even a neighbor) and test it on a ADSL line and that would tell you if the modem was faulty, if you leave your login details in the modem you would still get a DSL sync, if you put the other persons login details you would get a full connection. If it is damaged by lightning the fritz is not covered by warranty, and they will sell you a fritz even if your not a customer (I did this a number of times when I worked there)

Thanks for the info regarding testing on another line. A useful piece of knowledge I'll tuck awY in case there is a next time.
Cheers
