Thanks yep I'd buy the rural DSLAM - "what do you expect when you live in the Styx" cruel fact of life, however, as alluded to in my first post, I was consistently getting a 160, maybe max 180 ping from SNAP when I moved to them (better than the shaping of the dark side) - same-same line and DSLAM as present (unless some nice Chorus engineer has swapped my pair with someone else's).   So if modem and wifi ain't the issue, it must be - as you deduce - somewhere upstream (SNAP in NZ or their wholesale links overseas).  The thing that suggests the latter is that I noticed over the period of nine months, was the routing started to go via Japan, when before it went via west Aussie.....

Anyway, you've been more than helpful and I have learned a lot from everybody, so thanks to all, keep up the good work.

What does a traceroute to say trademe.co.nz show?

if not a congested DSLAM, then ild say your internal network is likely the cause of your increased more than expected latency there.

Likely a cloud backup service syncing, large email uploading or something alike..

Wargaming changed their ISPs in Singapore. They used to use Singtel but now use NTT.

Telecom (Snap's transit provider) sees the NTT path as "shorter" so it goes that way instead of via SMW3.

Back in mid-August, Wargaming started sending traffic back to Snap via NTT (traffic from Snap to WoT was still going via SMW3 at this stage - so traceroutes looked normal but with higher pings when it hit WoT singapore).

Exactly a month later, the traffic from Snap to WoT changed to also go via NTT - further increasing the ping times. Additionally the NTT path has had some congestion which is causing packetloss at peak times - which makes the game unplayable.

I've had a ticket open with Wargaming since the original ping increase last month, but they're useless. I had previously opened tickets with Snap, but there's a limit to what they can do as they have a couple of ISPs between them and WoT.

I've been running smokeping from my Auckland Snap VDSL to WoT since feb (back when traffic suddenly got routed via the USA and made it unplayable). You can see the increase in August caused by the change in return path, and then sept with the change in forward path as Wargaming turned off the Singtel transit.

The only real solution is for Snap to do what Internode does, and build their own global network (and that's not going to happen).

Of course, this is in addition to your first-hop latency

Now that is interesting.  I'm wondering why line 2 is now only 15ms where your first screenshot had it at 150ms.  If you tracert to the WoT server again is line 2 still a big number?  Or is that particular delay an intermittent issue?

What I should mention is that when I ran these last tracerts I had WoT and TS3 and web pages up and running.... now I'm really confused.  Thank goodness it's beer o'clock :-)

Dulce has 2 problems. The first is Wargaming moving to a Japanese ISP for transit, which results in higher ping times to World of Tanks. The other is first hop congestion. either he's got torrents or some other high volume of traffic on his line, or there's congestion on his cabinet / exchange at peak times.

Inphinity:
You would probably get comparable if not better ping to the US West server than Singapore, to be honest. I get about 130 - 140ms usually to US West. Although not sure if you can migrate a WoT Asia account to WoT NA.

It is not possible to migrate to NA.

When our packets go via Perth, Singapore is slightly closer. Perhaps things will improve in a year or so when the new Perth-Singapore cables come online. Until then, I don't see Wargaming caring about a few players on the other side of the world.

Hey Guys,

Most people are on the right track here, some (won't name names!) are being a bit harsh, and guessing who we use for things and what our plans of world domination involve! We do have several peering links to major internet peering exchanges and more coming up! We can't control everything (as some have alluded to) but we may be able to make this a little better, give me some time to look into what magic is required.

EDIT: I've been told there is an international cable fault near Shanghai, which means traffic is temporarily going a different route. It may not be the answer, but I will bet it isn't helping things!

I've gotten Wargaming to change their route to Snap back to a lower latency path, I'm now getting 170ms pings.

It would be great if Snap could work with their upstream providers to get it back to 140ms (ie via Perth instead of NTT).

very nice.

looks like it was only on your ip range though, so that could crop up if you land outside of your normal range.

I would have assumed it was for all of AS23655. I've got a static IP address in 203.86.0.0 (and no way to verify the routing from elsewhere in Snap).
