I think you are mistaken. SMB was removed. I have 6.06 as well.

Here's the firmware you need for SMB, http://en.avm.de/nc/service/fritzbox/fritzbox-7390/knowledge-base/publication/show/1447_Since-FRITZ-OS-update-SMB-access-cannot-be-used/

Ild recommend Against this.

especially if your on a higher speed plan. Snap have their own custom firmware designed to fix a few flaws with the way it works with UFB in NZ.

Any details on that?

details, as in in a official stance? there is a thread around here where ralph clearly states this.

i have personally seen the progression of the firmware updates and can say without question, absolutely you want snaps one rather than the stock which will support SMB...

Ok, thanks. Damn, thought i had a solution that would by-pass the bull...

There is the mention i spoke of.

You keep talking about this "overheating" problem but haven't explained anything further. Yes these devices can run warm, but this is perfectly normal.

"This page shows an overview of the storage devices available to FRITZ!Box. Here you can enable storage devices, configure online storage and make media contents available in the home network. You can access these data via FRITZ!NAS, FTP or Samba."
^From my 7490

Not plugging in my 7390 to check that, but i'm definitely of the belief that the device is fit for the purpose it was sold for, I don't believe snap has specifically advertised NAS or if they have, haven't called out SMB.
By definition if it can do FTP and HTTP, thats NAS functionality. So even if they did make the claim, then its still being fufilled unless SMB was specifically called out.

I think this isn't fair on Snap and I hope they don't cave. I'm a stronger supporter in the protections the CGA offers consumers, but i don't feel they have made any misrepresentation here.

last i checked, Samba was linux's implementation of SMB.

i agree. its unfair on snap.

Yes SMB == Samba == Windows network shares for the purposes of this discussion.

Interesting, thanks.

One of those further posts mentions upgrading a customer because wifi performance on the 7390 was weaker. A weaker claim than a missing feature I'd have thought.

Might try talking to Ralph.

The 7490 has AC wireless, the 7340 only has N. theres a 100mhz more cpu there.

Would not surprise me if the "Green mode" wireless was disabled in snaps version.

I have actually explained it further. But people insist on ignoring that in favor of the NAS thing exclusively.

The router randomly overheats. I cannot get it to do so consistently, but when it does it's about as hot as a freshly poured coffee cup. While it is this hot, DNS fails half the time, web sites come up slowly if at all, and voice calls go low bit rate, distorted and strange. And then sometimes clear up. Even with no other activity on the connection. I've had one actual lockup of the unit, and a couple of 'no internet' incidents from Windows in the middle of a download. Which disappears on rebooting the router.

I phoned Snap about it some time ago, and was told to disable IPv6. I wasn't keen but did so, and some of it stopped. But even now, at random times, it'll do it again.

The router is on a hard desk top with several inches of clearence on all sides and near a wall. The same position as the last 3 routers I have owned, all of which behaved just fine. The last one being considerably more reliable and capable than this one... But lacking the POTS socket for the phone.

It may be that some here decide that SMB support is not part of the deal.
It may be that some here think the overheating issue doesn't exist because they personally never saw it.
Some may even think that being forced to disable IPv6 to any performance at all is just fine.

But all three? Even with all three I still have no grounds for a replacement unit?

there was a IPv6 issue with certain OS's for awhile.

Last i heard, in the new firmware that isnt the case now.

I don't have any AC devices IIRC.

Anyway, my point was that other swaps to the 7490 have been done, and for small reasons like wifi performance.

The router overheats, won't do smb safely despite claims it would, and will not work reliably on IPv6.
I offered to pay a small fee if necessary to upgrade to the 7490 as is offered on the SAME plan I am on with barely a month ON the new plan, in order to re-obtain a feature I use daily and was promised at the time. I think that is more than reasonable.

Some here have decided it's a scam to obtain a better router and denigrate me at the same time. I do not know what part of this new router is an 'upgrade' in my case: I do not have any AC devices, and the other specs are the similar! Exactly what free upgrade am I benefiting from ?!

On top of that, I have been lied to by Snap CSR. Or atleast it seems so, going by reports here and elsewhere. I was told the 7490 does NOT do SMB, and the NAS 'won't do what you want it to' (whatever THAT means...).

I have a perfectly good router already. A netgear dual band gigabit DGND3700. It's faster, more configureable, and ITS SMB actually works. Also does DLNA. AND allows several SSID's per channel with different access rights. And I'd bloody use it! *IF* I was able to, if I was GIVEN that option. But Snap will not support anything other than THEIR particular Fritzboxes for Voip. And will not give out the config for VoIP. AND the Netgear does not have a POTS port, which would necessitate buying another device ANYWAY. For more than the $50 fee Snap charged for the Fritz...

So, I thought "Snap is a good crowd. I'll stick with them and buy their router and avoid the hassle". Well, it's been nothing BUT hassle.

(sorry Hio77, that wasn't directed at you. You've been very helpful).

Well, I have fritz os 6.06, and Windows 8.1.

Snap said at one point there IPv6 is faulty and should be considered Beta. I never had the issue previously ADSL with the Netgear though. I didn't mention it earlier because I thought it was just teething problems for Snap's IPv6 setup. But I'm not sure now.

last i checked my fritz did DLNA...

it doesnt overheat, ill surggest not putting it in or on the oven again. Mine lived on the carpet floor at a flat for a few months and was solid.

It does get warm, nothing too bad though.

How about posting your temperature gauge to prove its overheating? found in the System graphs section (dont have my fritz handy to check right now.)

IPv6 is a little iffy, but assuming all ducks line up, it works perfectly.

you can get your VOIP config from your router if you really want to, there is a thread explaining how...

the 7490 is newer hardware, an extra 100mhz on the cpu alone.

lol funny. OK re DLNA. I stand corrected.

Couldn't find it. Did find graphs for cpu usage, power usuage and RAM, no temperature though.

Tell you what I did find though: Snap's very own firmware for the 7390 saying it does Samba on the NAS:

Maybe I was not dreaming after all when I said i was told it does samba by Snap.........

IPv6 is a little iffy, but assuming all ducks line up, it works perfectly.

Snap told me it was Beta. I had to disable it to get the router to perform at all, they told me to.

you can get your VOIP config from your router if you really want to, there is a thread explaining how...

I realise that I can hack my way into that. But it'd still be unsupported, and unofficial. AND: I would still have to BUY a fritz router off snap to GET the info, defeating the whole purpose [of configuring a different VoIP device]. Bloody expensive config file!

the 7490 is newer hardware, an extra 100mhz on the cpu alone.

And yet my old 400mhz netgear keeps up with the 7390. I'm not impressed by mhz rates. If so I'd be running a Pentium 4 instead of a i5. The extra 100mhz means less to me than measured, real life performance. Keep your 100mhz, and I'll take SMB.

Likewise the wifi AC: I do not have any devices that use AC, and I'll not be re-kitting the whole house to use it. Any files large enough to justify AC would be MUCH faster again on sneakernet and USB3.0.

I'd like to know just WHAT un-paid-for benefits I am supposed to be gaining by the scamming I am accused of?

Just had to reset the famous 7390 that can do no wrong. Playing dead on the LAN. Couldn't get it via wifi either on other devices.

Wasn't overheating this time, just locked up I think.
