sofistek: said that they do supply a NetComm modem but not that model

You were told wrong :) But of course ours has custom firmware, and we auto-provision to make things easy for customers.  Internally we call it "Genius White".

I am however interested as to why you would go out and buy one rather than just re sign with us...

Mmm, I asked the question several times about this modem. The girl on the end of the phone said they did use a NetComm modem but not the NF4V (I didn't ask about which model they supported but the downloadable guide is for a different model; NB6?). However, she seemed to be able to bring up the different admin screens, by the sounds of it, so maybe she was lying.

Good question as to why I bought one. I guess I assumed that, not having a supplied one originally (my son set it all up when he lived with us and switched between two Linksys modems), I wasn't on a plan that provided a modem. But, anyway, this allows me to switch to other providers more easily (or maybe not).

I don't know what I'm doing wrong, I've been on the phone to the Orcon call centre 5 times with identical results - nothing except more problems.
First they think it is the modem and they send me one that is 10 times slower, next they send another one - only this time it is 5 times slower than the Black Genius, which they think is also very slow 6 Mbps. A Chours tech lives just opposite, and I managed to get him to have a peek at the White Genius modem. His first words were this is crap. After looking at the setup, concluded these modems were not good or not setup right - he specialised in installing fiber.
I'm now fairly sure both White modem are not correctly setup or Orcon is deliberately trying to throttle new customers. Secondly this is only adding to the existing problem of a poor or faulty line connection or installation at the exchange.

I'm sick of calling and being told they are looking into it - and nothing is done. Or calling and going through the exact same routine over and over again. ending with - were are looking into it. I doubt it, doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results is insane.

Kind Regards

There are now a huge number of NF4Vs out there as a number of ISPs are now deploying them. No they're not perfect, but they are a very good unit. The lack of postings in places such as here trashing them really does back this up.

It might help to explain your problem because I don't understand your post.

Are you saying the speed of the white is 5 times slower than the black genius? How are you testing this? What is your DSL sync speed?

Here is a link to the picture of the white modems diagnostic output.

How do you think I test it? I turn it on and watch it crawl around the internet.
I do wonder how many have this 'New' modem and haven't yet noticed how much their speed is cut?
Download & upload speeds have been around 1 Mbps, and it is a noticable difference between the White & Black modems.
The other White modem (not wireless), is twice the speed 2 Mbps and .7 Mbps upload. (this is the second one posted out)
I have no idea why, and neither does Orcon.

Really sounds like you have a line fault of some kind.

Did you ever get a ticket number from us?  Either way can you PM me your username please and I'll get this looked into as it seems like it hasn't been investigated properly.  A 1Mbps sync speed is unlikely to be normal and this should have triggered an escalation to tier 2 Assurance.

I can assure you the NF4Vs are not "crap".  I am using an NF4V myself, and we have thousands of these deployed across UFB, VDSL and ADSL2+ without incident.

This shows a very low downstream line rate - suggesting that you have line fault rather than a modem problem.

My speed for the Black modem was considered slow, but it is still several times faster than the white one - would the line fault affect one more than the other?

Thanks for any help.

Your line is syned at 1Mbit down. No wonder its slow.

"Your line is syned at 1Mbit down. No wonder its slow."

Is there anyway I can change that without sending the White Genius back for another replacement - shudder?

The Chours tech arrived today, and fixed an obvious line fault on the pole that the phone line connects to the house.
This may be the only line problem - not going to expect it is - but the connection now feels a lot more solid.
I'll continue to use the Black Genius unless I can get a better connection with the White one.

I'd like to thank Ubergeeknz - Dan, for all the help provided. I'm sure I'd still be in the same pickle without his assistance.

The Netcom is a way better router than the black!
