Hey guys, I'm upgrading to naked VDSL this week, and I'm wondering if it will be 998 enabled on the unlimited / naked plan? The Slingshot site says that VDSL speeds are "15Mbps to 50Mbp", whereas on 998 I've seen results well over these figures. I'm in Palmerston North if that helps.

 

I was also told that I didn't need to be home on the day of the upgrade, even though the site says a technician needs to install a new splitter and that someone needs to be home etc...should I be concerned?

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

 

  • you have reset your modem and router 
  • your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing - you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap 
  • your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing 
  • you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

 

  • Your ISP and plan 
  • Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL) 
  • Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin) 
  • Your general location (or street) 
  • If you are rural or urban 
  • If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin 
  • If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service 
  • If you have done an isolation test as per the link above 

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

 

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

the 998 rollout is well in truly fully complete at this point.

 

While 998 has been seen to get some impressive results, stating those figures isn't all that bad. If you get higher all the better for you! There are still borderline connections out there.

 

 

 

The tricky bit about 998 is with the separation of Broadcom vs ikanos linecards and their upper limits.

 

 

 

 

 

a tech doing an installation is assuming that your isp does full installations (which IMO they should) in the case a full installation is not done, a tech is not required to visit.

The 998 changeover is not yet complete - basically 99% of ISAMs are done, with the last remaining ones being completed this week (I've got customers on one particular ISAM and have been eagerly awaiting it!)

It costs the ISP $300 to include a master filter.

It costs me a couple of minutes wasted time since each quoted message here triggers another email "Someone mentioned you on GZ"... Ideally that wouldn't trigger for quoted mentions... eh @Freitasm ?

Hi all,

 

 

 

Not requiring a full install makes the install easier (i.e. you don't have to be home to meet the tech).

 

It's also $300 cheaper for us (as noted above), and this will be reflected in new pricing this month.

 

If the speeds aren't up to scratch, we can order an install then.

Quentin, something I suggest to all ISP reps I talk to is to make sure you note down if your customer does or does not have a VDSL Master Splitter installed - I've been to a few faults where there was nothing electrically wrong as such, simply that the wiring of the house was causing frequent disconnects or very low rates. It'd also pay to make your customer aware of these risks.
