Picked up the new modem, wasn't packaged very well at all, rattling around in the box :) So bad it has bent one of the power plug tangs quite badly.

Time to do some speed tests and see if the modem was the issue.

Looks like I have gained about 40Mbps by swapping modems. Still only 75% of speed but getting closer to acceptably faster than the 100Mbps plan.

Linetest gets very similar results.

I know it is only a visual indicator but the graph on Linetest shows the download initially peek at about 200 and then drop and flatten at 140 where the upload hits that same peak and stays there.

I had a very similar issue, but as a quick test to confirm.

Can you run cmd -> "ping orcon.net.nz -t" or equivalent and then go download something that hits 100mbit limit (run a speedtest if you want)

Then check if the ping turns to rubbish during the test.

OMG you are 100% correct.

Was getting a steady 15-16ms pinging orcon, as soon as I ran a speedtest my ping jumped over 100ms and I was getting timeouts.

What was your solution?

Yup looks like its the same issue, its a problem with the upgrade process.  My ticket was #12505078 if you wanted to refer them to that.

I gave up calling the helldesk after the 3-4th time and decided to stuck to email support and geekzone.

ubergeeknz chased it up from the inside for me so you could ask him nicely to do the same?

The last email from support said "Issue referred to the NOC and investigated by the Design and Build team" before it was resolved.

Mega-thanks man!

I have messaged ubergeeknz and also bameron on facebook Orcon page so hopefully it will get addressed. 30 days of trying so far and you are the most help I have had ;)

FYI, if you are thinking of going with Orcon, its been 40 days and still no change on my speed (still only getting roughly 100/200 on my 200/200 plan), dealing with support over the phone reinforces the 2 star (pretty well the lowest) rating that consumer gives Orcon for support, in fact other than sending me a new modem and requesting a couple of modem resets I can't see that any changes or investigation has been done at all despite numerous calls to support and even pleading for help with level 2's here :(

I will be cancelling my account this week with the fibre guarantee and shifting to Bigpipe. If my speeds on Bigpipe are only 100/200 on the 200/200 plan then I am happy to come back here and eat my hat...

@DrDee do keep us updated. The $99 modem that BigPipe offers is also pretty good if you're just wanting internet (no fancy stuff though). I am using BigPipe with a 200/200 connection + Edgerouter Lite and currently I am able to max out my network at 214Mbit down, 213Mbit up (there are some Linux updates being done at the moment so no Speedtest image, just take my word for it). Enjoy your $20 off using the link in my signature + 2mo free and lets see how you get on. You've honestly been messed around for too long here, you've given them ample chance to fix it so I think it is totally fair for you to move on.

Hopefully no hat eating is necessary here!

Good to hear you can get out of it @DrDee, wish we could do the same! (moving)

We're just gonna bite the bullet and pay the early termination because it will be worth it to not have to deal with Orcon helpdesk again.

Well, Here you have it.

Bigpipe were able to achieve in 3 days what Orcon could not in 40+ days.

Results speak for themselves I guess. The utter frustration of dealing with Orcon support and continually having to go through tier 1 problem solving when the multitude of testing showed that it was in fact a set-up issue just stupefied me, I cannot understand how it was allowed to go unfixed for so long....

And so it continues...

Can someone point out for me where it says that the fibre guarantee clause of the terms and conditions was only valid for 2015 in case I have missed it? For the life of me I can't find that mentioned in the T&C but apparently that's the reason they will not honour it even though my reason is legitimate and meets the criteria of that clause.

https://www.orcon.net.nz/about/terms/category/fibre

I have asked Orcon to point out where that very specific timeframe is outlined in the T&C and they said they cannot. They said they will escalate the issue because of that, but I have to call back in 2-3 days to see how that goes (sounded like the supervisor that my support person was going back and forward with really doesn't care what the terms and conditions say). BTW, I was completely calm and polite the whole time because it is not the support persons fault, they have a job to do, I spent a couple of years in service so I know what its like, although I was told not to interrupt when the support person came back the second time claiming that timeframe is correct and I asked "where? I cannot see the date you are referring to, can you point it out to me please".

Guess we will find out in a couple of three days :)

If ever there was a case where the not happy with it guarantee should apply its over a month of getting less than you are paying for.

Make sure you keep records of that you are disputing all the bills so that you have something to give to the debt collectors when orcon send you there.
