Have a question that is more likely aimed at any Orcon staff members that hang out in these parts.

I see today that a new firmware for the Fritz Box 7490 was released taking it up to version 6.80 while the version on the Orcon supplied modem (Dunedin gigatown) is still at 6.20. As the option of been able to update the firmware ourselves isn't available (update option not showing on menus), I am wondering if Orcon have any plans to push out a newer version at some point.

Have my fingers crossed.

Correct me if im wrong someone here but there is nothing stopping you from updating your fritzbox to that software version.

The catch is that it seems Orcon has removed the ability for end users to be able to update the firmware themselves on their supplied modems. FritzBox web site shows a couple of ways of updating the firmware. One is via an automatic interface on the modem web interface. That option is not there.

The second is to download the firmware image and update via the Wizard page but again, the Update button/option is missing.

I can concur being a gigabit user of Orcons they have taken out the ability for users of their supplied Fritz Box's to do updates looks like we'll just have to relay on Orcon to update them eventually or when enough of us moan n groan at them to do it

I don't know why Orcon have hidden that button, but it can still be done using the recovery tool method.  Someone on here posted the instructions a while ago for an earlier version.  I need to find them myself as I'm about to upgrade too.  I think the gist of it though is:

Download the recovery tool for the new version here: ftp://ftp.avm.de/fritz.box/fritzbox.7490/x_misc/english/FRITZ.Box_7490.en-de-es-it-fr-pl.06.80.recover-image.exe

Create a backup of the current config with a password. (I seem to remember the password is important or you can't restore it later.  A bit of a trap perhaps!)  You could also capture screenshots of important settings if you wanted.

This is the part I'm not too clear on, but you run the recovery tool on a PC or laptop connected to one of the LAN ports and in close proximity to each other, (NOT via wifi because it's going to be factory reset.) and follow the instructions given.

After it's complete you can access the router using the factory default IP address and password and then restore your configuration from the backup created at the start.

I'm sure if I've missed something someone will chime in, but search around Geekzone for the original posts to verify my memory.

Good luck!

I'm fairly certain its hidden for support reasons and the supplied version has been optimized and is stable within their network.

I could be completely wrong here but you better check first if you will still be supported if you choose to do the work around upgrade.

Not to sure about support reason, but definitely when viewing settings in standard mode. Try to find the setting to change to advanced view. You then should have the option to update.

Are you experiencing any issues with the service right now that could be solved by applying the later firmware?

I don't quite understand?

What I was getting at was Orcon techs being able to support you in the event of a problem.

It's a much simpler solution for support staff the know and support one version of firmware and one piece of hardware overs the 1000's of other combinations you could put together.

Which is why they will openly allow other devices to connect to their network but if you run into issues, you're on your own..

I don't have any issues with the current firmware but over the last year or so, there have been some nice new features added that wouldn't mind having. I use a lot of the features on the modem that the average Joe may not (Dect connections, Answer Phone, Phone book linking, etc). I fully understand that new firmwares would have to be tested to ensure that they played nice on their network so can handle not every new release getting pushed out but every 12-18 months or so would be nice. Also, with doing them only every so often, shouldn't be too hard to handle support.

Even the tech guy I spoke to about IPv6 tunneling for the XBone says Orcon need to update the firmware to the latest version

Funny note to go with this one. Had some friends just up the road go onto Orcon GigaTown so they also got the 7490 modem. Went to help them setup some of the extra features and noticed that they have version 6.70 firmware and still have the button to update it further.

Hey Orcon, can I have at least the same as they have?

Just use this link instead ftp://ftp.avm.de/fritz.box/fritzbox.7490/x_misc/english/

that will get you to the file you require without worries if it's been updated (which it has it's now V6.83)

It's not just issues with service for the Fb 7490 AVM has updated wifi and apps withing the router also security updates aswell so by not keeping their routers up to date they leave users vulnerable to attack through holes that have been fixed
