Hello being the devils advocate here is any other ISP any better??? Well really if Orcon was that bad why are they still highly rated.

Ok we all know Orcon didnt buy anough bandwith last month and hopefully someone got the boot for that or they learnt to implement forward planning. We know they had network issues last night. At least they told us and fixed it.

I have used xtra, woosh and ihug and Orcon overall (just not download speed) still delivers overall a better deal and service.

I for one are not switching as overall they are still providing a service I pay for. Put it into perspective I dont care that I go to bed at 11:00 pm and over the last week it has taken several hours to download that file I still got it.

However I dont log into game servers and play online that as suggested is a poor experance but there maybe other solutions.

We are all pointing and blaming Orcon but the phone lines I use are leased from Telecom old copper cable over 50 yeears old, Telecom phone exchange just as old and these exchanges are all connected by Telecom connections over a Telecom lines and Telecom are a major share holder in the Southern Cross cable - all Orcon has is the service wholesaled from Telecom one bit of shiny kit in the exchange connected through Telecom copper wire to my house.

Im saying the big picture how much does my ISP have to with the overall picture compared to Telecom and our goverments broadband policy I ask you.

Im staying with Orcon.

wjbong: it's pretty sad that i gotta get up early in the morning just to update/download some computer files. they ain't big files, just a few hundred MBs.

am still waiting to transfer to a new isp.
sadly for orcon users, if you are staying you'd probably get decent international bandwidth when good number of people (myself) switch to a different isp LOL that gets you more bandwidth ay :P

According to murphey's law, there be another problem occuring. I've fired off an email to them this morning; if things don't improve, I'm going to leave.

Mate, there is a HUGE difference between having a slightly slower internet (around 200KBs) which I would be happy with, and downloading at dial up speeds. I have paid for broadband, and I jolly well expect broadband to be delivered. 200KBs is acceptable in my books, 7KBs isn't accept, no matter how many platitudes you place at the door step of Orcon. Orcon need to get their act together and realise that getting new customers may be fine and dandy, but it isn't good business practice doing it at the expense of long term and loyal customers who have tolerated the ups and downs of service quality.

That's the thing. It works fine for doing normal stuff over the internet - I can watch Youtube, download stuff - browse websties no problems.

The moment hubby and I play WOW - which is our evenings - due to having to work during the day - that is where the service we pay for is affected.

So for those customers whom play MMORPG's this is where it affects us.

I believe other ISP's are doing better and this is not a general problem. I've been with Orcon for about 5+ years and these problems never used to exist. I was getting much better speeds and reliability 2 years ago on my 40gb 256k plan. I've been on Zeroshock for almost a year and it was fine until about May of this year, since then the service has been up and down all the time. Unable to connect to Ventrilo for gaming, unplayable latency during busy times, virus updates running at 5 Kb/sec, downloads running at 1-10 Kb/sec. I'd be better off using dial-up during "peak times" and broadband when not. I believe the Orcon+ and Layer 7 filtering/prioritising came in about this time.

The other half of the problem has been a lack of updates from Orcon, various different information when you ring the HelpDesk, trouble getting through and most of our Support tickets getting escalated and then never replied to.

The reality is Orcon should stop taking on new Customers until they've sorted out the problems and have enough bandwidth to cope with the current ones.

If I was getting the speed to Auckland that you get to LA, then I'd stay with Orcon as well. However, the best speeds I have ever achieved to LA was around the 1500-1700 mark. The last time I managed to get Speedtest to give me a result was to Sydney and that was a speed of 55kb/s, and I currently get about one tenth of your speed to Auckland.

As for downloading files, I've been trying to download one file for the past week, and it keeps dropping it. So far I've only managed to get 120MB of it, and I've even tried downloading it at various times of the day and night.

Sub dialup speeds for $60/month is not what I call a 'service'. It's an insult, and the bigger insult is that Orcon refuse point blankly to admit there's a problem or to offer any form of compensation.

Hence the reason I'm going to refuse to pay my bill for this month. If Orcon want to play hard ball, then hard ball they'll get.

First I get crappy speeds, then I get within a space of 1 hour, 4 disconnects which continued for over 3 weeks - I couldn't get incontact with them because don't have their phone number in the Christchurch phone directory!

Who the hell is running this two bit cake stall of a company?!

Dear Orcon

Since the 1st of May, 2008, the internet service you have been provided me has had a serious degradation of performance.

The service is unsatisfactory because it

a) has serious latency issues

b) it has interfered with the consumption of certain file types, including but not limited to .exe, .flv, .mp4, .swf

c) it has reduced bandwidth speeds to below dialup speeds at times.

d) your status page has been completely inaccurate, thereby forcing me to engage expensive sub contractors to prove otherwise

e) the problem has been ongoing for over 60 days

You have an obligation to carry out work you do with reasonable skill and to an acceptable standard. You have not met the legal requirements of the Consmer Guarantees Act and the Fair Trading Act.

You have ten working days to resolve these problem but in the meantime I will be withholding the payment of your account and will be forwarding copies of all correspondence to the Fair Trading Division of the Commerce Commission, Kordia and to the Fairgo Television producers.

Yeah. Orcon are awesome. I was only getting bad speeds because I was on Zeroshock. I sent an email asking the easiest way to ditch them, and they called me at 11pm that night desparately trying to get me to switch to a more expensive plan, promising me that my speeds would get better if I changed. I told them no thanks and hung up on the guy I was speaking to. It's not his fault, and I don't want to shoot the messenger, but I was just fed up with the bull5#!7

Seriously guys, stop complaning and jump ISPs already. Its just a minor hassle (unless you're on an unbundled plan or contract, in which case I really do feel sorry for you)

Its not Orcon's fault.

How were they to know that if you sign up & charge new customers to broadband they would actually want to use it ?
And cold weather & rain in NZ in the middle of winter - who'd have guessed ??

I fell for the lie that if I moved off zeroshock my speed would improve - I moved off zeroshock; low and behold, it didn't improve. I have given them several months of leway, but they've proven to me that my grandma with her spinners and weavers cake stall is better organised than Orcon.

Edit: And my traffic is so high each month bcause of the number of failed downloads; downloads scretching to a hault then dying altogether. 2.8GB download off Sun, and the whole damn connection dies.

Kiwipearls, that's exactly my experience as well. I play EVE and the last couple of weeks I couldn't even log in into the game. I've kept an Xtra dial-up account which I use every night to log in and play for 1-2 hours - if this game can work over a dial-up connection but not over my Orcon "broadband" connection, this tells a lot about the quality of the latter.

The wierd thing is, I can download stuff at 100-200kB/s off the web during the peak hours and yet, a game which requires a little as dial-up bandwidth can't maintain a stable connection.

As far as I was aware when joining Orcon, there is no contract - which is one of the reasons I also swtiched to them.

But I only joined in May - so I don't know if they have different contracts before then.

Today was the first day since joining that hubby and I were able to play a bit of WoW together.

I'd like to say a big thank-you to Vector for their network outage - it allowed me to have a semi ok Latency experience.

But I am guessing it is fixed now, as our latecny as of 6pmish has gone in the red.

Orcon:
Vector are experencing a network outage that is affecting all our services from the SKY Tower to Wellington.
Affected services include Voice, LLU Broadband, regular Broadband, Rural Internet and some Dialup.
There is no ETA at the moment however Technicians are working this issue. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

Hi guys,

I have just been made aware of the Vector fibre outage that has been affecting customers since 2pm - this will be affecting performance for many of our customers. We have no ETA for the fix at the moment, all I have been told thus far is that people are working on it.

I will update you if and when I hear any more.
