duncanblair: Yes, this issue has meant that we have completely re-evaluated the forecasting methodology we use, and consequently re-forecasted our bandwidth requirements going forward.

Too little and too late for many of us. I've already signed up with Xnet and just waiting on the switchover before cancelling my direct debit with Orcon.

And despite all we have been through over the last two months, with excuse after excuse, there is still no mention of compensation. Just how much have Orcon made supplying dialup speeds at broadband prices? I pay $60 per month, but others on here are paying $120!

duncanblair: A brief update for you: The international bandwidth upgrade has been ordered. We are just waiting to confirm the date which it will be installed.

Any chance you could give us a estimate on when you think the install date might be, or an estimate on when you think you'll get the date confirmed??

This is my biggest problem with Orcon too, they don't seem to want to give any compensation at all.

Hi Duncan

Perhaps you can calrify for us if any priortising is done between customers on different plans?  We seem to get told various stories depending on who you get on the Phone.  I've been told Yes, No, ZeroShock is a pool of customers, Zeroshock is not a pool just 'managed' and some other info.

Is there and ranking going on between say customers on a Gold Plan vs Purple vs ZeroShock vs even Older grandfathered plan?

I also sent in a Written Complaint and got no reply in 5 days, nor 3 weeks so good luck to you kiwipearls.

The best I could leave with was a $17 discount off my June bill. I could have followed it up further, but it wasn't worth the effort - all I'm going to do in future is anyone who wants advice on ISP's, I'll tell them to stear clear of Orcon. The fact that they were too stingy to even give me a descent discount after being screwed around for over a month and a half speaks volumes for the pathetic lack of accountability and leadership by Ducan.

Notice that he doesn't actually address *ANY* of the specifics? its all broad sweaping generalised statements of promises and apologies?

I'm sorry, but don't hold your breath hoping things will change, because they won't.

Couldn't wait on the switchover to Xnet as my direct debit goes out tomorrow, so just called Orcon and cancelled. No offer of compensation, no enticements to stay on.

Ah well, I suppose that's a little bit more bandwidth for someone else to use. (Don't rush everyone to use it, as I was getting speeds of 55k to LA, when it worked!)

I have let a lot go in this thread, but personally attacking me is not ok.

You got more than a 25% discount on your broadband service because at some times of day you got slow speeds accessing some content from some countries. Whether or not you think that is stingy I am not going to argue about, but I fail to see how that shows a "pathetic lack of accountability and leadership" on my part.

I often (as I am now) spend time updating you guys long after I should have gone home. I am not asking for thanks and a big round of applause, I accept that sometimes we do things wrong, and that sometimes people think that we are screwing things up, all I am trying to do is keep you guys 'in the loop' as much as possible and give you our perspective on things.

I realise that because I represent Orcon here I may not be your favourite person from time to time, but I certainly do not expect personal abuse for my trouble. How is that even remotely constructive?

This is not a support forum. I am not going to post here granting individual users credits, or indeed with blanket promises of credits.

Orcon always has and always will grant users credits where there are reasonable grounds to do so - asking for credits in an offsite forum is not the right place.

I second that.  There is no need for personal attacks!

Duncan has been nothing but courteous and is trying to help.  Attacking him or anyone else isn't going to help and will only serve to get you removed from these forums (I suspect).

Before you all go off accusing me of wrongfully defending Orcon or Duncan, I'll now let it be known that yesterday I finally chose to switch ISP's.  Unfortunately I was one of those users who couldn't hold out for the long run.

During my verbal conversations with Duncan he has been nothing but helpful and not tried to cover up anything once.

Hi,

Duncan, yup I think a personal attack isn't appropriate. I do think however it does speak to the levels of frustrations felt by a lot of people. This thread is 32 pages long, and will be twice as long I'd bet before everyone is happy or has moved to another ISP. Orcon has a LONG history of leaving its unhappy clients in the dark. This guys blues lasted 6 weeks, mine lasted 5 months before Beren Patteron finally stepped in and fixed my issues. I am back to slow speeds again, and whilst they are not dialup, frequently I cannot break 100Kb, which when you pay as much to Orcon as I do, really grinds my beans. Attempts to contact a suitably similar senior member of the staff have been ignored it would seen, even when really what I was asking for, was whether ADSL2+ (A significantly more expensive option for me) would see me offered consistently faster speeds. If answers were forthcoming so would additional revenue, as I would pay more to get more. I think you turning up here and giving updates is brave, but I really do think you need to be prepared to take a few for the team as the saying goes. Mostly thicker skin and not taking it personally may stop you feeling so attacked, as its clear to me that whilst he is picking on you, his frustration lies with Orcons ongoing issues, and these are not all your fault one would presume. Also I think if you were able to provide specifics more often, rather than vague indications, people would also feel a little happier. Again, I think what you are doing is great, every ISP here should have someone in these forums, or better still, how about just more communication in general. Its THOSE things that make a company great.

Would you mind telling me if the bandwidth for adsl2 is coming from the same pool at any point as the existing legacy telecom resold network? I am concerned moving to adsl2+ with Orcon will see me paying considerably more (Since Orcon doesn't offer smaller data packs) for the same or less than I am getting now.

Can you let me know, if I move to your largest adsl2+ plan, and I get ratty performance, will Orcon address this by way of a discount, or timely investigation?

Also are you able to find out, if Orcon will be introducing a 10GB data pack for adsl2 plans. I don't need 20GB additional, on the base 20GB, but I need more than 20GB.

From reading these forums the last month and a half - it appears the international latency issue is the entire Orcon network - the wholesale leased lines from Telecom (which I am on) and the ADSL2 LLU on Orcons network.

As I asked the same question as you a few weeks ago - that if my area was unbundeled and I went onto the ADSL2 network with Orcon - will that give me better latecny - the answer I got - if I recall precisely and to the point - was no.

Is it a matter of latency or of lack of bandwidth in total for the international gateway that orcon uses? Latency would more likely affect applications like voip and game play, and less so http and ftp and usenet downloading.

It was not a personal attack, it was an observation. I didn't attack you personally, I didn't attack your character. I don't know you, I've never met you, and I'm sure you're a very charming person. The fact of the matter is, my reply was done on the basis of what is being done, or more correctly, what isn't being done at Orcon about this issue.

Accountability would be to take responsibility, give all those customers 3 months free internet. The medicine will be bitter - but it'll keep your customers happy. When your screw up - you need to do something to demonstrate contrition. Simply apologising is not enough when the hordes at the gates are asking for the blood of those who didn't do their job.

You think this is an over reaction? I am a student, and I can tell you that I make much bloody sacrifice to get this internet connection for my study. I sure as hell don't want my $127 simply blown off as 'oh, who cares about him'.

How come some people here have speed issues and others don't?
How can this be?

As I am one of the lucky ones who have it like normal: (download a linux distro via rapidshare with multiple threads i get my max download speed of 615KB/s ) (single thread and it slows to about 200-300KB/s sometimes)
