To be fair Orcn have used this forum to spout their virtues & services  to gain business, ie. free advertising. What does Duncan expect is going to happen when the said service turns out to have serious issues, no matter what spin they put on it? And not just once, but continual issues, especially those of us on 'as fast as your phone line will allow ADSL2' - sometimes as fast as dial-up ! Underpromise & overdeliver, not...

Just seems such a waste, as Orcon used to provide a geat service for 5 years, and now I'm going, afrter 3 months of constant grief, I'll never ever be back...

brookz - I beat you hands down! How do you think my extremities feel?

On the Zeroshock plan for the best part of three years and based in Kapiti, but the last two months have been terrible.

As for having a go at Duncan, I have to agree with others here that it is out of hand. The dispute we have is with Orcon. It should rest with them, and not be directed to individuals. A lot of us are frustrated by the lack of progress, but this is not the way to deal with it. I'm pi**ed off as well, but I've tried to keep it civil. As for not taking it as a personal attack, it was. It was directed at Duncan and not Orcon. Therefore, it's personal. I know that Duncan is Orcon's voice on this forum, but the problem lies with Orcon, not Duncan.

As others have said recently and on previous posts, keeping us 'properly' informed is all we have been asking for. No lame excuses, just the truth. If not on this site, at least have it on your own status page.

OK, so how do I add the speedtest result? I've clicked on the Insert Image icon and copied the Forum Link from Speedtest, but all I get is the URL displayed.

Anyway, speeds are as follows: Location - LA, Download - 46kb/s, Upload - 126kb/s, Ping - 183ms

mmm, well there goes my theory. I thought it might just be the ADSL 2+ people or just ADSL 1 but since both of you have it we can rule that out.

Well looks like we will wait for the bandwidth then, but still strange that some of us are fine and some aren't, you would think all of use would have speed issues if it was a bandwidth issue...?

For us, it is interantional gaming - playing WoW - our private server is located in Dallas, Texas.

Speeds of torrents are a lot faster since I changed clients utorrent was not cutting it and I now use Limewire with Port Forwarding.  But even then I am not getting speeds that I know another friend on Orcon get's (and yes I do no torrent speed is based on how many seeders etc).

We spend our money for broadband to play WoW - which we can't due to interantional latency.  As soon as the weekend and evening time hits - there goes our time to play.  It is fine during the day - but we are at work.

I moved off Zeroshock after being told that the speed would improve if I went to a new plan. I was told that the new plan wouldn't have the traffic shaping, and thus, wouldn't have the speed issues.

As for having a go at Duncan, I have to agree with others here that it is out of hand. The dispute we have is with Orcon. It should rest with them, and not be directed to individuals. And yet you deliberately ignore the follow up post I made laying out the fact that it was not a personal attack. I don't know ducan from a bar a soap. The point I was making is that he is a big wig at Orcon, and continuous apologising without a clear demonstration of contrition does little to sooth my comfort as a student paying $127 per month to their organisation. My attack was not on him personally, but what he has done (or there lack of) to fix the problem and demonstrate some willingness to make amends with customers.

I see, but still I have been playing games like Half Life 2: DeathMatch and Team Fortus 2 all thou the last 3 months with NO latency issues (even when my browsing speeds where slow I could still play both those games online on a Los Angles server. (others too, but have no idea where they where based).
All my pings where around 100-200

To add the image, copy the "Direct Link" address to the image.

Then use the image tool (the one that looks like a tree) and paste it in.

Apologies kaiwai, but the two posts following yours caught my eye (speed tests) before I had read through your follow up post. However, I still think making a comment like that is a personal attack. I know what's it's like. I've been on the wrong end of a phone call and been called various names, and I was told the same thing, "It's not personal". Of course it's personal! If someone calls you a so and so, they are directing it at you, not the company you work for. Apart from that, I agree with you on the point that we are effectively paying Orcon for non-service. In your case, twice as much as I pay them.

With the fantastic speeds I'm getting at the moment, even trying to reply to a topical post sometimes results in my response being half a dozen posts down. I was even silly enough to try and download an 8MB file while browsing this forum, and got just over 1.5MB when everything went. No download, no internet. Five minutes of nothingness before it came back.

Well finally i decided to join,

When i noticed the speed drops today I said OH dear Not again !!! I was so angry.

without going to details on how many emails we have exchanged with orcon (and them never officially admiting faults)

Id be very understanding if they had send me an email about the traffic issues etc. but nothing , i have to crawl the web to find what the hell is going on.

They refused to compesate me last time they had the same issue.

I mean cmon ..blaming the weather is really lame excuse .

They didnt payed for extra data its not our fault, ohh yea they are quite happy to remind you when we are due to pay them.

Really Orcon get urselfs together. My friends are telling me to go to Xnet which I will if this repeats one more time.

I was on zeroshock aswell, orcon told me to change plans to get better speeds, I did, pretty much same thing.

Evening hours speed is usually not good. And all my friends at Xnet are fine.

Ohh and i dont use any torrents at all just from rapidshare from time to time and online gaming. I try not to hog the bandwidth.

Guys at xnet are having summer if you compare it with the status_page at orcon LOL

Thanks manhinli, but I've just tried that and it didn't work. Then again, it did take six minutes for the edit page to display before I could even try it. Had enough for tonight. Going to watch something, anything on TV. Anything is better than try to use the internet at the moment.

... and if you can't wait for the Javascript editor to load, stop the page, and copy in the "Hyperlink" address. I'll work fine too (as long as you're not in the editor.)

Maybe some dialup can soothe the aching? Smile

Yes, I was harsh, but the criticism was of what he has done about the issue. There is a big difference between criticising a person (their character) and criticising what they've done (their professional conduct).

You know what I would have done if I was Ducan? I would have done this, "I apologise to all those loyal customers who have stuck with us through thick and thin. We have ordered some more bandwidth, it won't be on stream for another month." then I would have offered some sort of discount; 1/2 priced of the internet bill for the next 3-4 months.

I've worked in customer service, and believe me, people don't care how much you apologise, unless you actually show your contrition through offering the customer compensation, its all hollow words.

kaiwai, I'm going to ask you to avoid making things personal, if you are having issues with Orcon - thats fine, we understand that. Targeting Duncan in such a manner is not really an appropriate response.

'Observations' such as
pathetic lack of accountability and leadership by Ducan.

and similar postings are only going to get this thread closed.

I'd like to see it run its course, but attack the idea not the person please.

The other matter for consideration, is that all the people complaining here, are likely only the small percentage either savvy enough to know where to find this place, or who care enough to let the company at fault know. For all of those people there are probably a dozen more who think its "normal" or who aren't of a personality type to cause a conflict, or who couldn't find a place like this to save thier lives. I am not trying to inflame the matter more, however I would be horrified if Orcon were making this out to be an issue affecting a small and limited number of people.

I actually agree with the suggestion of compensation, I'd say 1/3 of broadband bills for the affected periods of time. If Orcon was to do something like this, I'd bet my bottom dollar, next year, regardless of performance, they would be considered the best ISP in the country. A company who takes responsiblity is an amazing thing. Its rare, innovative and would win you more customers.

You would likely find a smallish percentage of people would claim it, and you could require people to submit a screenshot to prove they have had the issue.

The good press from something like this would be amazing I would think.
