While some see this as aggressive,

I don't see any issue, your either a high or low usage customer, save bucks where you can, if consumers can be savvy so can business.

Hi yes very aware of sparks marketing sly, I think I have mentioned previously an elderly family member who built a "premium" house in a premium beach front location about 4yrs ago, and I did assist them ensuring full wiring solutions were I stalled. Further they were 400m from an isam and more recently fibre at the gate and I ensured that would all happen seamlessly when it arrived.

A few months back I get called in as the alarm was not working, arrive to find a 315 router in the only location in the house it could receive service, which was a storage room at the rear of the house with no structured cabling.

End of story they were sold a pup, and all the investment in wiring and WiFi was lost, all to the benifit of sparks bottom line..........grrrrrr

This rant is not directed at the spark technical staff who post here.

I think the downfall here is, their resident IT person did not advise them correctly on the situation before they stepped into it ;)

 

It would not surprise me if this was offered as a cheaper product (which it would have been over copper)

 

 

 

i know for a fact that anyone i've setup networks for, their first call after such an offer is me to discuss the feasibility of it.

 

The downside of any complex enviroment is, your occupants need to know it...

 

 

 

point in case, i installed a RouterBoard3011 in my rack, but had not livened it up completely as i haven't moved in my rules across at that stage.

 

I come home after a powercut being told, the wifi isn't working right. The solution to the initial problem of "no internet" was wait more than 30 seconds for the internet to come back on while esxi booted......

 

 

 

took me ages to realize, someone had gone and found an unplugged cable, saw something that said router and went i'll stick it in here!... 

 

 

 

Later that night i was asked oh how did you fix it? I simply replied, I unplugged the cable someone plugged in. the look in their face, they knew that did it. lesigh...

This scenario is also very common for rural customers. Landline only with Spark and rural broadband with another ISP.

Rural customers however, are not the target of this product at this stage however :)

 

 

 

Is a very valid point that i honestly didn't think of despite the fact that I've encuraged folk in exactly that situation move off their conklin onto fixed wireless (non LTE)

Since your landline is effectively moving to Spark VoIP, you may as well move it to Slingshot VoIP. Then destroy the SIM card in the B315 and flick it off on trademe.

Officially probably, but the lack of tracking from Spark that I've seen on this, chances are the B315 will sit dormant for months. (I have a collection like this). So yes, follow my advise at your own risk and only after a couple of months :)

I plugged my original modem set up for Slingshot into the copper phone line and it fired up okay. So I am functioning on the Internet as before.  I didn't phone up Spark, because I couldn't be bothered waiting on the phone for 30 minutes to get a human being.  They're worse than the IRD!

 

Anyhow, I plugged in the wireless phone, and it works great, so I will just run both until I go near a Spark shop and ask my questions to someone there.   It does make sense to switch over to Spark at some stage, but my wife and I are planning to relocate to Christchurch around October, so there may not be any point in changing anything right away.

 

I appreciate the answers that you guys have given me to put me in the picture.  This is a great place to ask questions and get answers!
