Slingshot forums was told recently about the end of  Newsgroups from their service. "Slingshot Newsgroups Discontinued ed: ScottH"

Quote from Slingshot:
Slingshot has decided to stop providing our newsgroup service to customers.

This is because of the large upkeep required, limited users and the range of better alternatives free of charge in the market place.

More bandwidth for the users and more Space for the proxy caching?  Sounder better for the masses of users.

Wow
I never realised slingshot ran a news server.

I also use google groups now anyway because of the searching capability and I doubt that the news groups would have used up that much bandwidth - slingshot wouldnt be silly enough to carry binaries would they?

Can't be too many NZ ISPs who still run a news server..
