TrueNet were replaced with SamKnows for good reasons, I'd wait and see what SK reports have to offer once they have enough volunteers. As for open source stuff, they exist already, see for instance https://github.com/wanduow/amplet2/, SmokePing, or plenty of others. It's managing a reliable set of probes that's the difficult part. (hint: anyone with a VM farm is a terrible representation of the typical experience).

Your 700/300 speeds don't sound too bad - maybe some things you can do to lift that (use the Win10 app, not in-browser for instance), but as you've said that's not what you're concerned about.

Possible that MS speeds are impacted at the moment, given the huge uptake of MS Teams they've seen. And I'd guess the reason you're hitting Puerto Rico server is MS choosing that server - not your ISP's routing - which could again be MS controlling load. Steam speeds are reasonable - not great, but not terrible either from what I've seen.

I'd suggest checking what IP addresses you're hitting when you do those downloads and then running a traceroute. That'll give you some useful info to see if your ISP routing is actually part of the problem here. It could be, but from the info you've given I don't see a reason to jump ship just yet.

The issue with suggesting that MS speeds could be affected is that I got a much higher download speed when using my mobile phone as a hotspot (connected to the Spark network). Again, when connecting to MSDN through my mobile hotspot, I download from Singapore and not Puerto Rico. So suggests something is amiss with the routing? I'll try and find the IP address, and run the traceroute, tomorrow.

Having received a great reply from Voyager support just now, I'm most likely going to switch across to them and hopefully that'll solve things.

Ah righto, I read your original post as hitting the PR server in both scenarios (and figured both were too slow for what you expected). Some ISPs peer directly with MS which I'd expect to give the best speeds (although no guarantees - it could be a congested link), so routing is worth a look. For your download example (download.my.visualstudio.com) I'm seeing 1ms latency from the Vodafone core network in Auckland. For other services, I've used traceroutes to portal.office.com and outlook.office365.com in the past (hitting Sydney for me). It totally depends on what MS service you're using where you'll end up (plus whatever steering they do).

Don't forget that as useful as these tests are, bear in mind how often you're doing that kind of activity (downloading large files from MS), and that things can change from one day to the next.

Hey there - owner here, no we don't do any throttling at all on Voyager connections. If we hit pipe maximums, then we just go and buy more upstream connectivity! We have our own network all they way to Sydney, and we are currently investigating expanding this to the USA as well, so that we have full control and peering with as many people as possible.

I'm sure I'd be able to utilise my full bandwidth...but that's not really what I have an issue with here. It's the specific performance of the connectivity to the services I consume a lot of - the main example being the download from My Visual Studio (previously MSDN) which was really quite poor for a Gigabit connection.

I've just tried grabbing a file (on 2D 200/200) and also am getting it from Peru, only getting around 10mb/sec, normally it would max out the 200/200 easy - normally I'd see around 22-25MB/sec from MS, although that would be from a closer server normally I guess.

I would say there is definitely some congestion at MS's end, it might be a bit of a combination of that and the fact it's coming from Peru?

Thanks - was that from MSDN? Did you get the file from Peru (PE) or Puerto Rico (PR)?

I've spent the last 6 weeks trying to get performance out of Microsoft. Every time we (a small ISP) received traffic via our peering session with MS, the performance was terrible. In the end we had to advertise the specific routing prefix we were having problems with to our upstream provider, and not via our peering sessions, to attract MS traffic that way.

Doing that fixed our performance problems - speeds were 5-10 times faster.

I should say that talking to a few other ISPs, they didn't seem to have this performance problem, or at least no one had reported any slowness to them - So I can't say for sure it was an MS problem. Certainly seems like it though given the fix I deployed.

It also appears that MS are (or were) doing some work on their local New Zealand peering - they just turned off their WIX peering connection though it hadn't been advertising any routes for the last 3-4 weeks anyway.

If you can flatline your connection using a torrent etc then you're getting what you paid for - even if you're not happy with the performance towards specific websites/organisations etc. Your best recourse would be to show your ISP performance via your 4G mobile and then via them, and ask nicely why the speeds are so different.
