Hi, just checking the other cordless phones, did they connect to the wired phone network as well, ie do they have a phone cord out the back of the cradle or are they infact dect wireless extentions of the main base.

If they are dect wireless extentions then they should ring just as they used to, but if the other extention cradles are infact base stations with a phone cord connecting them to the house phone wiring then they are stand alone and you will need to have your house wiring integrated to allow for reticulation from the router not from the street.

Cyril

Hey cyril7,

No...the cordless phone do NOT plug into the house phone jacks. They are cordless phones that connect wirelessly to the base station. Only the base station phone plugged into the phone jack. Now it plugin into the modem.

The new DECT phones seem to be connected directly to the modem and registered with the modem somehow. They sound like what we need.

@Linux - Thanks. I'll update. Is there anything in the FritzBOx interface that should be changed?

"Calling line identification restriction (CLIR)

Your number does not appear on the display of the party called."

This part here seems to be of interest. If this is checked, then callerID shouldn't be displayed on the callers device. Is that correct?? How does this setting impact the one on the website account page - I have that box checked to remove callerID from the callers device?

Hey Cyril,

NO...we don't have DECT phones. I am asking if DECT phones (seeing they register with the modem) will all ring using VOIP? That is...if we buy some.

Hi, so I am confused, I presume you cordless phones are DECT based (maybe tell us exactly what model they are) non DECT cordless phones have not been on the market in over 20yrs, hence my presumption that they are DECT.

If all the cordless handsets are DECT and registered with the existing base station and that base station is connected to the router, then nothing will have changed compared to the original setup, if the main phone rings then all the DECT extensions will ring also, to imagine this being an issue with the Fritz or VOIP service is a bit beyond my comprehension.

If however you have some other setup not disclosed then all I have said above is irrelevant. Also just to be clear I have been in the IT/Telco/Network business in one way or another for over 40yrs so I am not shooting in the wind.

As mentioned, maybe tell us the model numbers of the phones you have.

Cheers

Cyril

Hey Cyril,

Posted the model a couple of posts back, but here it is Uniden DSS8955+2NZ.

Doesn't say DECT on the phone anywhere - perhaps they are not???

I'm am surprised as you that they don't all ring, but all I've done is unplugged from the copper system and plugged the base station into the VOIP of the modem. When i ring our number, only the base station phone rings.

Hi, so I dont believe the 5.8GHz DSS standard is compatible with the Fritz.

As for the extensions not ringing, its upto the base station to forward the ringing, the Fritz VOIP interface has done its job by activating the base, job done.

The only thing I could imagine is that the ring cadence from the Fritz is possibly distorted so not correctly detected by the Uniden base station, but I find this hard to believe.

Shrugged shoulders is all I can offer.

This could be a good call. The ring tone did sound weird to us both. Maybe that is it.

I'm going to investigate a newer model that is rated as a DECT phone.

There is so much new stuff in this new setup it is difficult to get one's head around. Thanks for the assistance.

If you're happy to invest into new equipment, you could look into getting the Fritz! Fon devices, which last I recall 2degrees sold?

Anything I say is the ramblings of an ill informed, opinionated so-and-so, and not representative of any of my past, present or future employers, and is also probably best disregarded.

Giggle: I notice in the router interface that is says... "FRITZ!Box 7530 FRITZ!OS 07.13, The FRITZ!OS is not up to date. Update?" Should I update the firmware?

Hi @Giggle - just FYI, Fritz!Box 7530 is the model of the physical unit of the modem/router, whereas Fritz!OS is the OS (operating system) or firmware for the modem.  The numbers you see may not correspond to one another.  Just for the record, until very recently, Fritz!OS was version 6, and Fritz!OS 7 was only released in the past year or so.  By all means update to the latest firmware available, however, I believe the latest version available for your 7530 could be 7.21 - at least that is the version available for my 7490.

Hope this helps and clarifies it for you, just in case you’ve updated to the latest FritzOS and still don’t see the FritzOS version number show version 7530 or something like that...

Have you tried intercom calls between the cordless handsets. That should work regardless of the base station being connected to an outside line. If that doesn't work maybe the extension handsets need to be registered to the base again.

If the landline issue becomes too much, you can always request 2degrees switch you to their Home Phone Basic service which will be what you're used to with Spark.  See paragraph 9 of the Terms & Conditions.  You won't get the unlimited calls to NZ & AU landlines included, but it should get you back to a familiar setup.

Alternatively, you may consider getting rid of your landline entirely if you have satisfactory 2degrees mobile coverage at your house (which will free up the $15 monthly cost to spend on a mobile plan).  While using 2degrees Prepay will give you WiFi Calling, the number of minutes included in anything less than the $40 per month plan may not be satisfactory for you to replace your landline.  As others have mentioned, check out Warehouse Mobile where they currently have an offer that includes a SIM card and $30 Top-up when you purchase a phone such as the Huawei Y5 2019.  You don't have to buy monthly packs with Warehouse Mobile (although they do work out very cost effective such as 200 minutes to landlines/mobiles for $4 per month) as you can top-up $5 once every 90 days to rollover your credit and maintain your phone number by using the casual rates of 8 cents per minute/text.

Getting DECT phones that will work with a FritzBox's DECT base station is a bit hit and miss.  The standard used by FritzBoxes is DECT GAP.  So the phone needs to say it is using that at least.  But even if they are DECT GAP, and will therefore connect, not all features will necessarily work, unfortunately.  The best phones, obviously, are FritzFon phones, at least one model of which was being sold by 2Degrees last time I looked.  They are the only ones guaranteed to be fully compatible.  They seem to be nice phones, but a bit on the expensive side.  Next best is Panasonic, but it varies from model to model how well they work with FritzBoxes.  No current Uniden phones will work - Uniden use their own variant of DECT which is completely incompatible with any other form of DECT, so they will only connect to other Uniden phones of the current Uniden DECT variant.  They do that deliberately so that you have to buy from Uniden if you want to add another phone.  But even then you can get caught out by them having updated their variant of DECT yet again.

Many thanks for the insights.

So much to learn and know :(

We don't have 2D mobiles - and reception is hit and miss where we live. We are looking into changing to at least one 2D mobile, but that will depend on the long term price. $20 per year prepay from Vodafone is hard to beat. Landline is important to us and cheaper long term.

Thanks for the info on the Uniden's and DECT. They are the ones we were looking at (we currently have Unidens). I could not find any fon phones on 2D's website.

Siemens do a nice looking DECT phone system - a little pricey, but would need to confirm they work. Don't really care long term if I even need a DECT phone or not - just want all the phones to ring like they do on the copper system.

Can't do much now that it's Christmas (or not willing too https://cdn.geekzone.co.nz/images/ico24.gif ).

Will follow up with 2D nce we are passed the break.

Log into your account, click on extras, then the hardware tab, scroll down the page, the phones are $89 each.

‘There’s no image for the phones so maybe safer to call after holidays just to check.

I did like Bung’s idea of pressing locator/intercom button on base station to see if that would make phones ring.

Did that and I don't have anything like that in our account page. We only have broadband, so are you logging into the mobile site?
