Ah, so another example of incompatible device-specific configurations? Lord, modern mobile standards are cluster****s.

Can't say I disagree. The flexibility of SIP is very much a double-edged sword. If anyone can do something a little differently, then everyone does. The fact that you can buy a phone from any vendor anywhere in the world, drop a SIM in it, and it will just work on 2G or 3G but you need a special custom firmware version just for that specific model in order to get VoLTE to work still makes me shake my head.

The fact that a general purpose computing device has that stuff baked into the firmware instead of just being an app is what makes me shake my head. No other voice chat app has that requirement for special firmware.

The firmware is the equivalent of an app. But OTT clients have the advantage of not having to interoperate with anyone other than themselves. If you use WhatsApp and I use Signal, we can't call each other. VoLTE has to be able to talk to everyone, everywhere.

This is what blows my mind.
Any Apple handset from the 6s and up just seems to work just fine as if it's BUILT for it and you don't need anything special.
Any Android handset in my experience except for Samsung handsets just seem to be a massive PITA and or just incredibly broken?
I remember having issues with my old Huawei P30 with VoWiFi 2 years ago and VoLTE on any Apple device just seems to work just fine on any carrier(haven't tested 2degrees as sorry you're not my main carrier anymore :( ) and even when I had my Oneplus 8 (now currently rocking a iPhone 12, OP8 became too much of a hassle) I had calling issues left and right with forcing VoLTE to work, which it DID and it was great when it worked but it would often miss calls or even refuse to connect out going calls when it didn't without restarting.
Too long didn't read is android stack sucks and is a mess except for Samsung and Apple just works.

You're still getting some custom settings on Apple. They're in the carrier bundle, rather than a complete custom firmware as is more common in Android world.

You seem to have missed the Samsung threads (one example)...

Its really bad today, just called my parent's landline (Spark Fibre) and kept getting comments they could barely make out what I was saying
This very poor sound quality is really impacting my ability to do business. I regularly have situations where a password or similar needs to be given to me, and it's impossible to understand what these characters are, even when the customer gives me a word for each character. Being in a weak signal area doesn't help, and WiFi calling quality is poor also, so I tend to switch back and forth hoping for some improvement. More and more of the people I deal with have foreign accents, which makes things harder again. More than ever, we need a good wide bandwidth quality service. Surely us Jaffas deserve better?
Tivo upgrades to operate with the new OzTivo EPG, support and service. Over 400 performed here so far. See: www.hillcrest.net.nz
Does this poor voice quality save 2 degrees money in any way? Can't help wondering if it reduces the amount of data they have to use for voice? Otherwise why would they have such bad quality?
I also don't see the 2 degrees marketing machine commenting on this issue.

@Mahon 2degrees marketing do not need to comment an Engineer from 2d has already covered in this thread about the IP interconnects coming with lots of work going on now
Once the SS7 links are all replaced with IP links call quality will be HD between networks

That will only help those people within 4G coverage. Those of us within 3G coverage will have to put up with poorer quality calls for a reason that I do not understand.
