If that's the same size as our type 100, the lettering is about 2mm high. I'm thinking a fair bit larger, but still in the fairly subdued grey.

I'm thinking something like a flat piece of sheet metal inserted into a slot to release internal clips - similar to how factory car radios often need to be removed. But the risk is that people might simply force it, and a missing ONT is probably better than a broken one.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

hio77:

I suspect i'll never get the numbers, but i would be really keen to know what the stolen ONT rates per generation are.

3rd gen ont comes with a powercable with a nasty big label saying "DO NOT REMOVE FROM PROPERTY"... but, then it looks like a "Modem" too...

Is that the label printed in white on light grey?

The WiFi antenna makes it look more ISP router-y too.

Should really be on the rear plate with a large "This ONT has been stolen" or similar :D

Perhaps they could add an alarm circuit that goes off if ONT is removed from the wall, a loud siren and voice that says "DO NOT STEAL THIS ONT, REATTACH NOW".

(Low) Quality of installation contributes to this issue. It wouldn't happen if they put the ONT somewhere inconspicuous (cabinet or ceiling space etc) and just had a conspicuous RJ45 readily accessible to the occupant to plug the ISP router into. But nope, they throw it at the middle of the wall in a dining room or lounge and joe-average can't tell the different between an ONT and a router.

It can't go in the ceiling space as it would overheat, causing a potential fire hazard.

Overheating != fire hazard, though it could/would cause reliability issues. If something is a fire hazard at 40C ambient, it's still a fire hazard at 20C.

It needs to be accessible so that tech support can ask you about the lights on it and to change cables etc.

All the talk of moving or labeling is missing the obvious answer.
The ONT should be screwed to the wall or the base. If you bolt it down, it looks more like it belongs to the house.
It worked for the fiber termination box.

Hmmm, we had a customer claim that a stray dog was responsible for removing the FTP from his house and running away with it, wires and all.

Try as I could, I just couldn't picture it from the supplied photos - unless the dog was particularly adept with a screwdriver, as the four screws holding it to the wall appeared to have been very cleanly removed as opposed to just ripped out by force.
