I guess we're lucky then to get a whole day then!

We've just had 5 days with no dropouts, but it went down at 10:30 last night.

Ditto, had 5 days of solid broadband, with no disconnects.  Yep same thing happened to us, no ADSL from 10pm til 9 this morning.

Hi all,

Long time reader, first time poster.

I am having EXACTLY the same issue as w2krules.  Dynalink RTA1025W (Broadcom chipset), house has a central splitter and I am connected to the Onehunga exchange and experiencing a loss of connection for extended periods.  Was signed up to Orcon Silver+ on the 6th of October, connection was fine until around the 16th of November.  The issue usually manifests itself as the modem being able to negotiate ADSL synch (have tested forcing ADSL2+, ADSL2, G.DMT, G.lite to limit the impact of any line noise) but failing to establish a PPP session.  Debug logs suggest that there is no response to the PPP requests from the router.

I have tried to work through customer service on a number of occasions but their knowledge seems to be limited to restarting the router, hard resetting the router, "resetting my port" at the exchange, unplugging phone devices and telling me to try another router (which unfortunately I don't have ready access to).

2nd level have chopped me back to G.DMT (I'm guessing to increase the noise margin), but the issue persists.

Around a week ago I upgraded the firmware from 3.30j to 3.63u and as w2krules pointed out, for the past few days it had been fine (fooling me into thinking my firmware upgrade had resolved the issue).  At around 10:30pm last night it all went dead.  This time however, after rebooting the router (and also trying to trigger a port reset by leaving it off for 30 minutes) there was no DSL synch at all.  It was still down at 7:30am this morning (when I went to work), but is obviously working now.

I suspect faulty gear (Dodgy DSLAM?) in the exchange or maybe an update to the gear has introduced an incompatibility with the chipset on our routers.

w2krules - I'm getting seriously sick of this, we need to get this sorted.  PM me and we'll try and work them from both sides.

Thanks glump and dnom for your posts.  Very, very interesting.

glump:  16 Nov is about when we started getting dropouts.  Until then speed and reliability (apart from the usual overseas bandwidth issues in the evening) were fine.  We have exactly the same problem - usually the router passes all of the diagnostic tests, but there is no connection to the Internet.  I then restart the router, which syncs OK but now won't give me a PPP connection.  After a period of time, which can be many hours, everything comes right.  Last week powering off the modem for 10 minutes worked a treat, it wouldn't  even sync last night.  I'll PM you after Christmas.

dnom:  We too had 5 days without problems until the dropout at 10:30 last night.  Are you on the Onehunga exchange?

We have all had a gutsful of this.  My wife and I depend on the Internet for work, and our teenagers use it more than we do!  So I'll be changing to another ISP after the holidays.

Im alsoon the Onehunga exchange.  Got LLU when it first arrived and for the first month it was great, no dropouts and 11bps.  Then ....
Dropouts at least once a day, the PPP link goes down.  Have an Dynalink RTS1302, as well as a Nortel C251.  When the "Fault" occurs no matter which modem I put on the ATM PVC will come up (dsl LED), but the Auth PPP sesssion wont (PPP LED).  Same with both units.  Have had orcon escalate to a L2 case and had chorus fix a number of copper faults.  Orcon "tunned" the dsl, but speeds keep get slower, now I'm at a max of 6.9Mbps

When it does go out its normally at least 45 mins before ppp will recover.  The routers log  files show the ppp request mesages going out to the DSLAM, but there's never a reply.  Not sure what the Orcon DSLAMs syslog is showing (ORCON go and have a LOOK!!!).  Eventually the dsl ATM PVC will die and on the next reboot of the router the whole lot will come up.  (I suspect something has finaly timmed out on the port and its done a soft restart)

THere was a big outage on the 23rd, from about 9pm until 9-10am on the 24th.  I got a call through to the help desk and they said they had a fault at the exchange. (ORCON why don't you admit that on your Network Status Page!!!!)

Was secretly hoping the card in the DSLAN had finally gone tits up and it'd get replaces and the fault might dissapear.  Given that the DSLAM equip is new, there is a higher chance they have a HW fault, or it may be SW from a new revision thats not elsewhere in the network.  (I work for a major global manufacturer of telecommunications equipment).    So if your still getting issues (Iam and they are worse since the 23rd outage)  see if its ppp going or the who dsl and ppp, especiallly if you are off the Onehunga exchange

G2

Thanks Gibbo.  Given that the people who read Orcon forums are probably only a few percent of the total Orcon subscribers on the Onehunga exchange, they clearly have a problem.

I'll email the link to this thread to their support desk on Monday.  Will be interesting to see their response.

We swapped one of the cards out in the Onehunga exchange yesterday.

Let me know if there are still problems.

I had this problem 2 months back and found that someone had reconnected the SKYTV to the phone jack. Which of course was not fitted with a line filter. I removed the phone link and have had no problems since. I did have much dialogue with Orcon and they patiently checked everything out. But NO PROBLEMS since.

Thanks bubastis.

I'm sure your problem was similar but from the symptoms described by the customers experiencing the issue (ADSL synch maintained, PPP dropping) I'm not quite sure it was the same.  Generally when a phone device is connected and active on an unfiltered line the interference causes the ADSL synch to drop (which also takes out the PPP session).

Just got back to the big smoke, lets hope that the card which was replaced in the exchange resolves the fault for good.  I'll give it a couple of weeks this time before I get all excited.  Wink

Another dropout on Saturday (10 Jan) evening.  Same pattern as before Christmas - lost the Interent, rebooted router, waited until late Sunday morning before DSL sync happened.  Well over 12 hours of no Internet - at least it was a Saturday night.

Sat nights issue wa an exchange and effected all orcon+ Onehunga users.  They publsihed it on the Network Issues page on the website.  While an outage I'd say its different from what we had seen over December as the dsl was dropped not just ppp.   I've certinally seen a change since they replaced the card just before New Years.  According to the their own LLU usage  page, I was getting 7-8 sessions a day with upto an hour between sessions.  Now I get a single session lasting up to 4 days (Which is good for adsl) .

When I checked on Sunday morning, they hadn't noted the problem on their network status.  And it was very similar to what happened the weekend before Christmas, so I hope that these events are infrequent.

But we're no longer getting the dropouts every 2 days or so, and according to the Orcon log, we went for 17 days from 24 December without a reconnection.  So yes, the reliability is much better.
