Notice that in the 2degrees eSIM page, to transfer eSIM from your current device to another that you have to ring up which is a tedious way of doing things.

Apple has already implemented a way to transfer eSIM from an iPhone to another as long as you have your current iPhone with your eSIM profile with you.

https://support.apple.com/en-nz/HT210655#eSIM-physical

2degrees, will you be using Apple’s method of transferring eSIM from your current iPhone to another or do we have to manually ring up?

At the moment we’re in the initial phase of our eSIM launch, but we’re already working hard on the next phase to bring more eSIM functionality to market, including making Apple’s eSIM transfer process available to iPhone users. I don’t have a timeline to share at this stage, but we’re working on it!

Query for the 2d staff on here. The press release said "in the coming month" with respect to consumer plans. Was that meant to say in the coming months, plural? or did it mean in August 2022?

Asking because my Spark plan renews at end of August and I will be jumping ship the moment eSIM is released for normal people, so understandably don't want to pay Spark for a month I wouldn't use.

Thanks :)

Now available for consumers:

Just over two weeks after launching eSIMs for business, 2degrees has unveiled eSIMs for its consumer customers.

The eSIM functionality is available on a range of Apple, Samsung and Oppo devices – including the new Samsung Flip and Fold devices.

eSIMs enable services on modern handsets and devices without the need for a physical SIM card.

“There’s massive demand for eSIMs for both consumer and business users, and we are glad to have a solution that will appeal to a range of people – from those who have been juggling a work and personal phone, to those who want to use a local SIM while roaming overseas, or have a backup service on their phone. Now they can use a single device and virtually switch between SIMs,” says Zac Summers, 2degrees Chief Marketing and Strategy Officer.

Summers said offering eSIMs also allows people to trial the 2degrees network.

“We have spent more than a billion dollars on our mobile network. It’s, quite frankly, awesome. With eSIMs, it’s easy for people to give it a trial. I am confident they will like what they see.”

Summers said the next step is making eSIMs available on wearable devices.

Summers said that 2degrees’ 5G rollout continues at pace as well.

New locations available in August include; Ellerslie North, Northcote and Wakefield St in Auckland, and Halswell, Bush Inn, Sparks Road and Riccarton West in Christchurch.

eSIM capable devices include:

  • iPhone XS, XS Max, XR, all iPhone 11, 12 & 13 ranges, iPhone SE 2020, and SE 2022
  • Samsung Galaxy S20, S21 and S22 ranges (excluding FE models), Note20 and Note20 Ultra, all Fold and Flip models
  • Oppo Find X3 Pro, Find X5, Find X5 Pro
  • iPad Mini 5th gen (2019) and later
  • iPad Air 3rd gen (2019) and later
  • iPad Pro 3rd gen (2018)

It’s 2022 and we still need to go in store to do things. We should be able to switch to eSIM on 2degrees website or app like some of the mobile providers overseas.

I wouldn't mind as much if my nearest store wasn't 3-4 hours drive away....

The thing I'm wondering is what will happen if I go into a store and ask for an eSim but don't have have an officially supported (but still in reality esim supporting phone).

Will the staff still give me the QR code so I can proceed to do setup myself (much like how I can buy a physical sim and put it in any phone I want)? Or are they going to refuse to give me the esim QR code if I don't have a phone officially on the 'supported' list?

Yeah, they're going to do a print-out of a QR code. Surely they can email you the QR code and the more technically able of us can do it ourselves.

Just got my eSIM working on my Pixel 6 Pro (Not on 2degrees officially supported list). Did it through our business account manager. They had to physically post out the QR code, but they provisioned it remotely after I set it up on my phone. Pretty easy and the hardest part was having to wait for NZ Post to deliver an overnight envelope a week late!

Was hoping it might finally allow VoLTE to work on my device, but alas it hasn't changed anything.

Just keep in mind to use an eSIM, a SIM swap needs to be done (changing the SIM number from your physical SIM card to the eSIM). All of those stories you read both nationally and internationally of people having thousands of dollars stolen from their bank account due to banks using SMS for 2FA (don't get me started on that ...) affects eSIMs too. What's to say some crim doesn't get an eSIM QR code and asks for you phone number to be put on that eSIM. These crooks are clever and cunning and will find any angle possible to gain access to your 2FA methods. So while it seems like telcos operate in the dark ages by asking people to go to stores for an eSIM, just keep in mind the overhead that generates for them and they wouldn't be doing it without good reason - that reason being the SIM swap fraud mentioned above. Super annoying but a sad reality.

Good reason but the banks are at fault and not the mobile providers. Banks shouldn’t be using SMS to verify account, they should be using 2FA codes through an app like Google authenticator.

EXACTLY! That's in part why I said don't get me started in my previous message. I know some banks are getting better at doing this - I'm staying somewhere other that my normal address at the moment and when trying to sign into ASB's internet banking last night, I got challenged through my ASB app as to whether it was me login in or not and that's exactly how it should be - not SMS. Sadly though it's the 0.001% of SIM swaps that are fraudulent (not an exact number but you get my point) that ruin it for the 99.999% that legitimately need another SIM for some reason or want to move to eSIM :(.
