I can cope with a temporary blip that is honestly communicated and taken seriously.

I got off the phone with Orcon L1 support this morning. The guy was patronising and useless. He suggested maybe it's DNS. Because yeah, DNS totally affects sustained TCP/IP throughout and it is usually so aggecrd by . I told him I'm using their supplied DNS via DHCP so he asked me to confirm if I'm using an automatic IP address not. Um. DHCP? I guess I could be using DHCP for DNS discovery then override the DHCP lease with a self-assigned IP, but why exactly would that result in intermittent peak time network congestion?

They won't do anything useful at all until I have one of their supplied modems, which they want me to pay postage for both ways plus a service fee. NOPE.

I offered to prove it wasn't the modem by hooking my laptop up direct to the ONT (just set the vlan ID and it should work fine) but "we don't support that".

He assured me that my connection was fine. Gee really? That's because it's Sunday morning. Can I call you at 9pm tonight when it tanks again? No, because you're closed. So how exactly do I get you to act on this? ARGH.

Haven't seen anyone on ISPs outside 2degrees / Vocom / Orcon pop up here. Might be time to swap if they're going to go all Catch 22 on me about raising a fault.

Not worth ringing the helpdesk. They’ll have no idea and no it’s not DNS or DHCP or any client side user issue.

Chances are their NOC already knows there are routing issues at times and will likely have addressed it already or are working on it.

It’s happened 3 times in the last week between 8pm - 12am. Shorter in the last two times.
Let’s see what happens this evening :)

Same time each night this seems like they doing planned work. They could at least state some thing on their network status notice on their web site. Poor customer service.

I fired up a Speedtest Tracker instance on my server in order to attempt to track any potential problems and can't say I've seen any. Based out in Kapiti on 2degrees legacy.

@bameron @Sounddude anyone you can pass it through to? This may be a Vocus Wellington handover issue perhaps?

The weird part is that it starts at 8pm and runs through ~ 9-10pm (well that was yesterday) - previously went to 12am and seems to certain core routes. There are other routes which are working okish - not full speed but ~ 500-600.

Unfortunately the core routes are whats required so could indeed be a Vocus Wellington handover issue.

Then they can put up a fault notice on their faults page. Not good enough to just BS this silently.

/edit - my IP shows up as 2deg now?
