No way you can request a different ONT. LFC(Tuatahi) will turn around and say no.

I use quic. They're a great ISP for techies. Use my referral I get money off my bill! You can get the setup fee waived too via this code when you order! R177510EBNVXP

Ah really? That's a shame. I guess I'll be getting 10G supported equipment then 😭

@cxf

Am I able to request a different ONT to be installed through TTF or 2Deg - The other option is the Nokia Hyperfibre from Chorus, which supports auto-sensing for 1gbps/2.5gbps/5gbps/10gbps?

That would solve my issues, because I realistically only need 2.5gb dual eth ports on a router - and if the Nokia ONT is supplied I can use what I have here.

I must say, considering 2Deg offers only 2.5G and 4G hyperfibre plans - It seems odd to have an ONT that only supports 1G or 10G auto-sensing over Wan.

I still have a fault investigation under ID#42561877, if you need my contact info for anything.

Thanks!

The ONT is a choice by the LFC, not the retail provider/ISP, and you wouldn't be able to use the Chorus Hyperfibre ONT unless you had a Hyperfibre circuit with Chorus.

Agreed TFF's decision on this ONT model for Hyperfibre is perplexing, however they are introducing a new Hyperfibre ONT end of the year/start of next which supports 1G/2.5G/5G/10G port negotiation, so I'd say they have seen the error of their ways!

yaajme:, it literally just seems like the ONT refuses to assign an IP to the Deco.

Yep, that's normal behaviour. The ONT doesn't assign anything, and you certainly shouldn't be able to access the admin interface for it.

TP-Link is pushing it up the chain to senior techs, and I have provided them a bunch of data.

Funny stuff.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

I wonder if you could put a switch between ONT and X50 to handle the negotiation.

Something like Buy the QNAP QSW-2104-2T 2 ports 10GbE RJ45, 4 ports 2.5GbE RJ45 Umanaged... ( QSW-2104-2T ) online - PBTech.co.nz

That is a very expensive switch, and unmanaged so what it does to vlan10 is undetermined.

Better would be the cheap ones like on aliexpress and a cheap 10 gig sfp+ in it which would come in under half that ones cost, and its managed so you know you can pass vlan10 between ports, and then use the other ports for something else like the lan side of the router.

I would strongly advise against putting some kind of box in between the ONT and RGW.
It will be stepping down a 10gbps line rate to 2.5gbps - you want to be damn sure of its queueing capabilities...

It is likely you will want some configurability of the queue/shaper along with knowing how to configure it correctly.

Or... you might not get the results you want/expect

2degrees don't block BYOD devices at all. You can use any router you like. Reselling 2degrees broadband is not at all going to change anything there.

Plus, @aj6828 going by your signature you're only reselling Hyperfibre to Chorus areas only and this is a Tuatahi First Fibre area. Your site also has wording that is very, very similar if not a direct copy and paste to the website of a particular Orange ISP.

I took this as a magical way to swap to chorus, I'm just a numpty. He did however not shill the hell out of me for this fibre, and actually gave me some really helpful advice instead - so props to him.

Just to update everyone, and anyone in future that might have stupid issues like this - after a bunch of research and suggestions here are the following CHEAPEST solutions:

Mikrotik 5009UG Router - With the MikroTik RJ45 SFP+ Copper Module. Around $500.

This will get you a 10g WAN port using the SFP Module, and one 2.5G out and SEVEN 1G LAN ports. No wifi but could use the supplied ISP router in AP mode for this.

Xiaomi BE10000 is around $450, and you can get it from AliExpress. This has a 10G WAN, and 4x 2.5G LAN.

However, this is a chinese only device, and does not support VLAN Tagging in the firmware - so you have to either request to be untagged via your ISP or wait for OpenWRT to support this device, which will enable VLAN Tagging (It looks like its in progress).

Netcomm CF60 is around $800.

Probably the easiest solution to this issue, should work straight out of the box and you can get it locally from PBTech.

Jankier Solutions:

You can technically get higher bandwidth/speeds using something like "Dispatch" - which creates a SOCKS5 Proxy that load balances multiple connections on a single endpoint. https://github.com/alexkirsz/dispatch

In my example, I was able to get close to double the speeds (2gbps) using this method, with one ETH connected directly to my motherboard, and another connected to a ETH-USBC Adapter.

Another option, which im unsure of the security related concerns is just to untag your VLAN on request of the ISP and jam it straight into your main machine - use a router over a bridged connection as an AP for WiFi.

I'm sure there are other options, but I hope this might help someone - or anyone.

Thanks!

SFP+ is https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006803881352.html - choose the 10g one

The switch I have is https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006278753506.html - It has a default IP address on it rather than DHCP which is a pain, but the UI is basic but functional.

I changed the PSU to another one because the supplied US plugged one made an annoying noise.

I got the SFP+'s thtu the choice deals for less than that price, so once you have looked at a few of them you should start to see them come up in the deals.
