Been with Orcon a barely under 3 days now.

While I do enjoy their image as a company, as I have come to understand, the end product for me personally is hellish.

I've gone from Telecom for a dispute over national tolling $440 bill worth, and connected to Orcon citing a better relationship with the company about 3 years ago, one that I was looking forward to receiving.

Since then, line attenuation of 55 down, non-existant video streaming, non-existant downloading, and virtually pointless browsing internationally, I am trying to find the most amicable solution from here to there.

I talked to 3 different Orcon Consultants, not a bad bunch considering they are all kiwi's, but basically the image they had painted me by the end of the call was that "The Company does limit usage of bandwidth on different aspects of your day to day browsing."

To me personally, it really isn't more hardline-net-communist than that. Limiting how much I can take to unfathomably unreasonable speeds (6kb/s 2am rapidshare)

The day that my internet with Telecom had my Tube8 streaming like a dream until i was capped at 6Gb a month, are now long lost memories in this dichotomy of company revenue and consumer satisfaction.

They aren't giving me unlimited speed. They are giving me exactly what they want to give me, when they feel like i should need it.

So all I can do from here is move to another provider in this now completely f***** arse pineapple of a situation, where its not some kind of problem with my line or modem. They know exactly what is making me frustrated, and will continue to practice it out on myself and their other customers.

What do you all think I should do? I really need to get some solution out of this either with Orcon which is preferable, because as far as I am concerned this product is not meeting my expectations in the slightest.

I may be wrong, but I can't see Orcon changing their ways at your request any time soon.

If your expectations aren't being met, find someone who can meet them, good luck.

All residential ADSL is best effiort shared bandwith with no SLA (service level agreement) or gauranteed speed.  This is reflected in the pricing of the services (compared to business connections which may have SLA or may have gauranteed speeds).

In my personal opinion I think some ISP's in NZ are definately:
- Overselling their international bandwidth
- Running a poor user to available bandwidth ratio
- Using traffic management that is not performing adequately

I think Vodafone, Orcon, Slingshot do fall into that category currently.

My suggestion is you change to Snap or Telstra PDQ.  Alternatively perhaps even consider going back to Telecom (you didn't really explain how you ended up with a $440 toll bill?). 

I think you will find their network performance significantly better than the ISP's I listed earlier.

Another option is a business grade connection but of course you would need to accept that you will have to pay a higher amount for gauranteed speed/qos/etc.

I mean this is god-damn attrocious:



Trying to download avast. I mean honestly, is there something wrong with my setup? Because I am at wits end.

In regards to the Telecom Bill (it was national toll calls i thought i had blocked, the youngest one was calling a friend in whanganui on holiday), I paid it with my credit card, and they still direct debited it from me despite me calling to get them to cancel it. Clearly no one actioned it so they took another $440. Calling for a refund, because I am a truly broke arse f*cker, they politely told me that I can use it as credit for the next month.

I told them to get f*cked, I actually need that money to feed myself, so I can physically make it through the month, to even use their piss poor service. So I changed provider.

I have sent 2 emails through to them in regards to this matter, all just line resets and pure nonsense. They also billed me for 7 days more than I was connected because of a lack of communication from provisioning, so I had to pay that and same deal, its a credit against my next month.

I reckon I am royally getting screwed here.

What did the Orcon helpdesk say when you rang them to report the problem?

Are you on an Orcon+ plan?

Specifically this part...

If you are already connected on an unbundled Orcon+ plan and your line is connected to a roadside cabinet then it is likely that the speed at which your modem sync's (your connection speed) will be negatively affected. This ranges from a small impact, through to (in a small percentage of cases) making your connection unusable. In the event that your connection is severely affected we are more than happy to discuss alternative options with you. This may include the option to transition back to our traditional Orcon network. The intention will be to transition you to an unbunled Orcon+ service from the cabinet once we are able to install our own equipment in the cabinets (sub loop unbundling), sometime later in 2009.
