Just seem to have the luck of hitting the right links at the right times :)

And before anyone starts down the track of "what private sites are you on", Im not using private sites when I hit those speeds, just everyday public ones.

I had some screenshots somewhere.... if Ive still got them I'll post 'em up :)

Spong: Just out of interest, I ran a Neotrace from here to a number of sites on the west coast of the USA. All but Youtube showed a pretty direct route from Auckland with reasonable speed. However, the route to Youtube is via Sydney, then Tokyo and then onto Youtube in Sunnyvale California. It looks like the bottleneck is between Sydney and Japan. Anyway, I hope to be on Telecom on Friday, all going well. Never thought I'd ever ever leave Orcon to go there.

Google have caches splattered all over the place, so it will vary where youtube traffic comes from. Which is why some videos come down fast and some crawl.

We are working on the youtube issue and I will have something to report very soon!

Sorry we have disapointed you. Always welcome back :)

Looking forward to hearing about this. Over the last year or so it has become quite disappointing, to the point I need to let a YouTube clip load completely before attempting to play it. Any time day or night (well I had kinda hoped that it would be a bit quicker during the daytime due to all the kiddies being at school).

I wish someone at Orcon was able to tell me this before now, but it seems their CSR's are forbidden to, or don't know what's happening. I really wanted to stay after such a great run over the years until recently, but Youtube performance is particularly important to us at the moment. Hopefully I'll be back home when things are better there.

As I have said in the past, youtube is important to us, so we want it to be as quick and smooth as possible.

You tube for some reason is now comnig from Japan!, which has slowed things down a bit. Especually with the Southerncross cable going to the USA and not Japan!

We are aware of it and working with our upstreams to resolve.

My shift from Orcon to Telecom occured without drama today, and boy what a difference. A quick Neotrace shows a direct route from Youtube in Sunnyvale to Auckland, and boy does that little red buffer line on Youtube fly past quick. I'm in heaven now. Orcon have really pissed off a few people by procrastinating over this. I mentioned that Youtube was crawling in via Japan, and they acknowledged it a day later, but it hasn't been fixed despite months of complaints. Now I have to do battle with them, because they promised they were only going to charge me until next Monday, but the invoice received today is charging me for another month. BTW, I've tested Youtube links from some of my customers systems on the North Shore with Orcon+, and they suck just as badly. My advise, run, don't walk, the grass is greener next door.

I give up. I'm ringing Orcon today to sound off my leaving notice.

I never thought I would say this, but Im looking forward to going back to ADSL1 from my ADSL2+ (or sort of ADSL2+) connection.

Screw you Orcon. So much for doing good for the customers, Orcon is outta' here!

hi all (have just posted this to another thread, so apologies for duplicates) - i thought it worth mentioning here that some work was carried out this evening to specifically improve youtube performance.

if anyone has any feedback drop me a dm on twitter (i'm @tsalmen), or do the same to @orcon (duncan will get it). or you can email me (address is on the orcon contact page).

cheers
thomas

Yeah, noticed a huge improvement this morning watching youTube, zero stutter and ZOUNDS ! it buffered the video clip all by itself. Just like it used to be.
