kfella2000:
manta: BTW, I forgot to say above that numbers starting 0227, 0228 and 0229 are NOT going to be released, according to the cust serv chap.

I dont know if that CSR has told you the truth or not there as there is a number 022888 8888 listed on Trade me and the bidding on that number believe it or not is up to $3210 at the moment. So I dont think they would only release one number in those higher ranges and not the rest. I am like comradehunt and have a number in the 0229 range I have in mind too so I hope that CSR is wrong about it too.

HAVING a number on the network in the 0228 range does not equate to RELEASING the 0228 range for us to choose a number on. He was not saying that there will be no 0228 numbers.

No there is a major security flaw that is being fixed. It could be tomorrow or next week before it is available.

TradeMe
We didn't get this one quite right (sorry). So here's, the deal. We have only released about 10% of our number range for 'pick your number' so that's about 1 million numbers. We will release more over time and we will let our existing customers know first. So here's our suggestion, if the one you want isn't there now, why not port your existing number for now (and we'll give you $5 for the pleasure) and we'll let you know when the next set of numbers become available. Cheers, 2degrees

Four_seven: As others have said, the procedure is as follows:
...
Call 200 to setup PIN (also activates phone) - Do not bother with voicemail setup yet

You don't need to setup PIN. You can hang up as soon as the call connects. Just as well because the PIN setup system was broken when I tried it and I needed to talk to an operator to fix it.

I spotted the above on TM yesterday, and was going to put it here, but thought it still doesn't help - "We will release more over time"... define time, one number range per day, per week, per month? "let our existing customers know first"... how, by emails to everyone in advance?

I have asked those questions on that auction, plus about the rumor 0227/0228/0229 will not be available to choose from (is that correct or not), and as of me writing this, they answered the questions made at same time, but left my one unanswered.

Like another guy on that auction, I bought a stack of the sims for my family, and planned to personalise the numbers to existing cell numbers or homelines, then send them out to them. If the 6,7,8,9 range cannot be used, then that blows that idea away.

Let it be know that this is 2 Degrees's first broken promise.

I hope they don't go down the same track as our other telecos in annoying their customers.

Come on, they haven't confirmed or denied anything yet.  Most indicatations point to the number ranges being opened up over time.  In fact I would go as far as to say that the responses on the trademe auction are about as official as any word you would get here.

Their July Press Release about the Trademe auction numbers promises 10 million numbers to choose from at launch.

Now I know it's not exactly 10 million as they have reserved numbers as well as those being auctioned, but I didn't expect less than 1 million at launch, with drip feeding.

From 2degrees via email

"I do apologise for any inconvenience that you have experience with our online service and I can assure you that our technical team is looking at this as we speak. Yes that is correct what you read off geekzone, we are letting our customer choose their own number and I can also confirm that we will be releasing other prefixes in the not so distant future.

I would love to give you an estimate time of when this situation would be fixed but at this point in time I cannot."

After waiting all day I got my reply (on TM), it was the standard line so they totally ignored my question. Plus got my name wrong too!

" Daniel, we didn't get this one quite right (sorry). So here's, the deal. We have only released about 10% of our number range for 'pick your number' so that's about 1 million numbers.
