WOW, WOW, AND WOW!!!!

Technician came, transferred our line over to merge with the main one, now getting 10Mb/s to Auckland, 9.7 to Sydney, 7.8 to LA. Pings of 17, 34, and 142!

Admittedly it's 9.20am on a Saturday morning, but I know from using the in-laws' connection downstairs that these speeds are consistent day and night.

I'm happy!

My line got cut over from Orcon to Telecom yesterday as planned. However the technician didn't complete his paperwork, so Telecom can't activate my ADSL username. My phone is working, but ADSL isn't. I know I have been cut over as my modem is showing ADSL 1 sync speeds on the Telecom exchange, vs the Orcon 2+ speeds I was getting before yesterday.

Probably won't be going till Tuesday now, lucky I have a VMC card I can borrow from work.

Overall Telecoms customer service has been great, but them dropping this little ball still makes me realise they still aren't 100% sorted.

I will be moving back to Telecom soon, I can see. Disconnections at peak traffic times, lousy download speeds, game pings that veer wildly between 200 - 800 all the time. At least with Telecom ping remained constantly round the low 200's.

This extra international bandwidth, I have noticed no difference.

Really Orcon is rubbish. I only hope that people read this forum before trying Orcon.

As for service, you complain, they ask you to do batteries of tests. Nothing happens. All they do is give you meaningless tasks to do so that you are kept off their backs. They know the problems already

yes their service is totally rubbish. Called them to complain, they ask me to do all those line test, isolation test and stuff(obviously it doesnt help a bit)... called them back said I am still having the same problem and they will say "JUST DID A LINE TEST FOR YOU AND YOUR LINE WAS FINE, try call back in a few days if the problem persist" yes thank you cpt obvious, I know my line is fine the entire time... I think its just too irresponsible for them to hide the fact that its orcon's problem causing all those crap internation speed, crap ping ingame etc etc.  Oh they might even try and blame on my equipments "maybe its your modem or maybe its your cables".

And yes if I call them again in the next few days about the same problem, yes they will just ask me to do another isolation test.. lol

Thanks for reminding me, I need to chase them up to chase Chorus up... #$%^ AGAIN! I said, like 6 pages back that I better not have to chase them up because it's their bloody job to manage this stuff, and again here I am, having to chase them, again. I expect better for the amount they're charging - if my datacentre did this sort of crap, I'd be not paying them for the month, and their contract would back me up. I've had it with "best effort service" meaning "we can deliver sub-par crap and you can't do anything about it" from every blasted provider in this country.

And has anyone else noticed that Telecom suddenly got good at the same time as everyone else getting bad? Coincidence? Yeah right.

Telecom actually have been upgrading there national network it seems, with all these cabinets rolling out etc, and telecom have a very large piece of international pipe,, where orcon has a 1 lane country road and expects to fit 4 lanes of auckland city traffic down it... of course orcon's network will then congest and slow down.. add more lanes orcon... whoops too late orcon, you've dropped the ball since June, and you've lost tens, perhaps hundreds of customers...

An ISP making use of the telecom phone line network for their last mile DSL connectivity cannot give you an SLA as they do not get one from Telecom. They get a 'best effort' service themselves so its impossible for them to offer you a guarantee without you paying for a data circuit which does come with an SLA ie UNS, HSNS, Fibre, Wireless.

Most people's DSL connections are reliable and do provider fairly decent uptime for the price we pay, looking at mine I haven't had re-sync or disconnection in 26 days and I've had it up to several months in the past before.

Your SLA with your data centre will be what 99.98% or maybe 99.99%? uptime (depending how they come up with their % rating) ie 5 to 10 minutes of downtime a month, and I'm confident  upon breach of that SLA you won't be credited your full months bill, perhaps only a part of it. And for that connectivity you fork out a lot more per month that you would on DSL.

I agree that you shouldn't have to chase up a job though.

My problem is indeed mostly that I have to chase them.  If they were on top of these sorts of things, it wouldn't rile me so much.

I should point out though that on the topic of the SLA from my datacentre - I'd get 10% of my bill back for 99.9% uptime.  I'd get 100% of my bill back for 99% uptime.  And the uptime I get from Orcon is much less than 99%.

Well today I called to cancel my connection having switched over to Telecom.

They asked my why I was wanting to cancel so I gave a brief summary of the issues that we've all been experiencing. Maybe I was expecting more but there was zero concern for the reasons I gave, no further questions or clarification, and no empathy. Not that it bothers me I'm just sharing my experience and thoughts.

I don't know, I would have thought that with so many unhappy people on here complaining of similar issues for such a long time they would have been a bit more concerned, then again I suppose we probably represent a small percentage of their total customers who may not notice the things that we notice. I guess it might only matter to them when we start telling friends and family to avoid them.

Bingo!

I've already told quite a few customers not to even consider Orcon when thinking about a new ISP.
The only reason for anyone to want to join Orcon in my opinion now, is the no contract (and even thats subjective to 30days notice).

Let us know how you find your Telecom connection! I am very quite interested.

Also, what plan did you move in to (Not trying to deviate from discussion, just thinking of alternatives)

Telecom is brilliant, can't speak highly enough of them. No peak time issues, speed is fast and consistent (hitting 10Mb/s to Auckland, 9Mb/s to Sydney - used to be 6Mb to Auckland and 5Mb to Sydney when on Orcon), pings of 17ms and 34ms respectively (used to be about 88 for each location on Orcon), YouTube buffers very quickly and never had a single stoppage, downloads fly, overall very happy with them and glad we moved.

On the Pro plan (40GB) as part of the TotalHome package - has interleaving turned off by default and a static IP.
