cyril7: Fair enough, what a pain, I take it they have tested out at the pillar and its ok there? if so is it too hard to replace the leadin.

Hmm.  I'm somewhat scared now.  My connection speed has jumped to 12Mb/s - and if there's one thing I know it's that 12Mb/s through a cabinetised LLU connection is impossible.  I sure hope they didn't just move my connection to UBS without asking (since it's a businessline, it'd mean I suddenly get stung for local calls).

But it can't be UBS - Orcon insisted that their VoIP lines can't be delivered over a wholesale connection?

I'm really confused now.

Ragnor: Also don't forget kids, residential internet is a shared network best effort system.. at busy times you will have contention for available bandwidth on the backhaul from the cabinet to the exchange, from the exchange to the ISP and from the ISP to the... you get the point.

Fair point, but since I switched to Telecom three weeks ago I haven't had a single night where things have been bad. Orcon was bad every single night for at least two months prior to that.

telecom charge so much they got plently of bandwidth to spare. Id definitly move to them if I could aford there crazy datacaps and overage charges

hmm, thats a bit of a mouth full there. Have you rung Orcon to confirm?

If they are assuring you that nothing has changed. Maybe you want to just note down the time and date of the phone call, and keep that in mind just in case anything funny is billed.

Yeah, they definitely moved me to UBS without asking.  Just got a call from Chorus asking about that new line that I (have not) requested to be installed.

What the hell, Orcon!

Talking to Orcon now, hopefully my account manager knows more than me about what they're up to.

(Edit) Apparently it's intentional - Orcon moves all cabinetised customers back to UBS and manually applies credits each month to their accounts to ensure they continue to pay the same price as they did on LLU.  Seems to me that there's no chance of Orcon ever turning a profit with huge loss-making plans like this though - the economics just don't make sense.  How odd.

Make a complaint with orcon so they have yet another instance of customers they can use to show the govt that what telecom are doing isnt working

No issues dc/ing etc. Browsing/emails been fine, torrents have been good as well, can even max my net connection at 2mb/s as well which is awsome ;)

Im sorry Orcon but you've annoyed me too much and I think Ive finally found the exit door :

1. I get a ADSL connection and speed in an area that the orcon map (and telecom) says is ADSL2+
and get charged more for it - why does ADSL plans cost more than ADSL2+ plans?

2. They changed my phone number when I moved house - they told me the phone number wouldnt change and no one formally told me the new phone number!

3. Youtube and rapidshare speeds are an issue of course...

4. Their website is full of Iggy Pop at the moment and not a lot else...

5. Slingshot can now offer me the same thing for $13 LESS per month...

So Heres your chance - give me one good reason to stay with Orcon or I will be going to Slingshot ASAP...

Ive been with Orcon for a very long time so it will be a shame to leave them but if they can no longer offer me what I want then I dont have much choice really...

I will also be calling Orcon tonight to see what they can say but I dont hold out much hope there either... I always seem to get the call centre staff that arent so bright...

Doing your best is much more important than being the best.

I'm sorry to say this, but the one good reason to stay with Orcon is that they are not Slingshot.  Slingshot has been taken to Fair Go over deceptive (and outright fraudulent - but apparently still legal) business practices, and apparently has poor browsing speeds ever since they put in that new cache.  Go check out the Slingshot forum here.

yeah, you are right and i tried to stay with them, however, their staff told me off, they said i should leave them if i am not happy with my plan, i am also moved to UBS and change my plan without any notification and charge me more with less bundle since change plan and now refuse to refund me.....reallt piss off..

Another pisspoor few weeks from Orcon.  Let's ignore the pointless speedtest and try their pingtest...

Your grade 'F'
Very poor. Real time internet application performance will suffer greatly on such a connection.  Test to other servers to confirm

Orcon sucks
