Heya everyone

Normally I love Orcon, they generally have good speeds and good service, but unfortunately since i have moved to my new house the connections I am getting are very poor.

let me define very poor... the speed that the link establishes is dismal, see stats below...

Also the link drops out all the time.... I only have 3 jackpoints in the house, have checked all the wiring for corrosion, there is no alarm and no sky to get in the way. I have tried different modems, different filters... even having nothing else connected to any lines anywhere.

I have spoken to orcon and they pushed out a different profile that increase the signal, but this has not made a huge difference, maybe made the connections active for a few more min. , normall my connection is not as slow as listed below... but during peak times it does drop down this slow.. if i did a speed test with this connection - if it even loads, i get around 56k

Bar getting Orcon out to check the lines is there anything else i need to consider?

Are you on Orcon+, did you area get cabineted?

have you restarted your modem? unplug leave at least 1 min. reconnect power. may not work but worth a try.

This could be do to poor wiring, you may need a service person check your wiring.
Check the wiring box outside, you may have a plug you can insert a phone into the
jack with, usually a test jack.

If it is an old house, it may need to be updated in wiring.

On DSL there is no way you should only connect at 56K.

I have an old ISA 56K modem I use for AOL here in America, with this I connect at
56,1400 so you have an problem there with wiring, this is my guess.

Hi, I assume by the Infineion vendor ID you are on Orcon+ (ie a LLU connection) is this correct, as its very important to sorting your problem.

Based on the stats you have been all over the place but very low sync I would suggest that you are in a cabinesited area and suffering from mid span injection issues.

It would be useful if you could tell us where you are (send me a PM if you sensibly dont want to put that up publically) street/town(or city) is all we need to know to establish if you are in a cabnetised location. you can check this at this site.

If this is the case, ie you are on an Orcon+ plan and in a cabinet area, then you would be advised to move back to a Telecom Wholesale plan (still with Orcon if you wish) and your speeds should return.

If you are not currently on a Orcon+ plan (not LLU connection) then purhaps you have some serious wiring issues or by mistake you have been left on the home exchange and not migrated to a cabinet, in which case midspan injection issues would arise again.

Other things to do are isolation tests to by pass as much house wiring as possible, this means disconnecting averything except the modem, but from what you have indicated you have done a reasonable level of this.

Yeah i am on orcon+ From that map it looks like I am cabineted, FOR/A
Have PM my address to you.
I have restarted my modem and left it off for at least a min, as well as completely isolating the modem and having nothing else on any lines. The house is old, but the wiring internally looks ok with no corrosion. connection drops out lots, like the dsl link won't stay up for a day.
Sometimes it reconnects at around 5-6mb but it normally is very flakey.
At what stage does it become a internal fault? at the street or at the house? I am down a ROW so hoping it is not at the Street.

rendude what modem are you using? I'm on Orcon+ as well and was using a D-Link 502T modem which constantly disconnected (sometimes 10 times a day), so changed to a Dynalink (different chipset) and haven't had a single disconnection in two months.

Main modem is a Thompson, have also tried dlink 502t, and another dlink.... actually come to think of it, they all were from other isps... but i guess that should not matter.. although the thompson has telecom settings in the fw i guess, which i have not bothered to remove. But i may well go and buy another modem anyway, as i would like some n wireless :)

on another note, all of these modems worked flawlessly at my previous address

Hi, you currently are not going via a cabinet as those ones are not due till 2011, so your directly connected to the Exchange. My estimation is that your are just over 3km to the Exchange based on your actual location and assuming where the cables would most likely run. Therefore your attenuation of 44dB is reasonable and if all was good should be able to achieve 5-6Mb/s.

I would still be suspect of your house wiring, if you can disconnect at the demarc and connect your modem directly there is the only real isolation test. You mentioned in the PM some odd wiring in the demarc, purhaps a photo would be good.

You also may want to try getting your modem to only connect at ADSL1/G992.1

ok, i have now plugged my modem straight into the demarc and now my modem is now living beneath my floor boards, thank god for wireless :P

odd wiring was not at the demarc, but at one of the jackpoints, it was using different colours, instead of red and white it was blue and white or something....

Anyway i have connected a bit faster... like 5mb/s and i will see how it goes to see if it makes a difference... if it does not, then i will be getting onto orcon again.

You probably had the modem plugged into a filtered phone outlet, i.e., are you sure you don't have a master splitter filter installed somewhere.

If you plug it into a filtered socket they typically wont sync at all and show attenuation way aboe 44dB.

Blue and white is the normal pairing for the first line, orange and black for the second, red and green are also used sometimes for the unfiltered dsl signal. Quite a departure from the old 3 wire colours but it makes sense I guess.

Re run some cat5 from the demarc to where you want the modem and install a filter at the demarc, this way you will bypass all the old wiring issues.

My connection has been a bit more stable, have now done as Cyril suggested and everything seems to be working fine. hopefully speeds will get better one day, but at least i have a pretty stable connection at the mo.. cheers for everyones help
