PaulBrislen: I think you need to re-read your original post. Yes, you mention Vodafone and Vodafone NZ in particular.

The company that hasn't signed the deal is Two Degrees. You'd have to ask them why they haven't. Their deal with the othe Irish carriers may well be part of the deal they have with their SMS hub provider as Steve suggests. I don't know as I don't work for 2D.

I can assure you this has nothing to do with any conspiracy theory you've put forward.

Paul

I think you need to re-read his original post.  He may have mentioned Vodafone NZ, but not in the context you're implying.

Dangermouse: Here is the response, verbatim, I received from 2degrees when I enquired about txt issues from Ireland...

"At the moment there is an issue with text messages not being delivered from Vodafone in Ireland and the UK to 2degrees customers. Texts are being delivered to them ok but as we do not have an agreement they are not sending the replies onto our customers. We have posted more information about this on our website as it is affecting a few people - http://www.2degreesmobile.co.nz/texting-with-people-overseas....

2Degrees have stated the problem quite clearly here - it is with 2Degrees as VFNZ have pointed out, so asking all VF customers in Ireland/UK to complain at VF in their respective countries will not work. TXT from there to here will only work once 2Degrees signs the agreement end of story.

Eight months down the track and still no resolution...

In short: Vodafone Ireland and Vodafone UK are not forwarding SMSs to 2degrees in NZ, presumably to protect the interests of Vodafone NZ....

Bazzer and Dangermouse: both Paul and John will have taken exception your presumption - unless you have concrete proof, rather than a presumption these kind of statements are not helpful. Yes there is an issue, 2Degrees have admitted it is their problem, hammer their support team to resolve it and leave VFNZ out of it.

I dont think Dangermouse is suggesting the Vodafone NZ are directly putting pressure on Vodafone UK/Ireland, at least that's not how I read his initial post. This seems to be that Paul is implying.

DM seems to be saying that Vodafone UK/Ireland are dragging their feet in signing an agreement with 2D as it's in the interest of the group. Is this true? Who knows? That's his presumption, and of course the VF reps on this forum would take exception to that, because it paints them in a bad light.

However, DM is allowed to presume things on a forum, right? He's not stating it's a fact, he's stating his opinion in the absence of proof to the contrary. The facts are that 2D and VF UK/Ireland have not signed an agreement and that's why SMS are not being delivered. Are 2D not trying hard enough? We don't know. Are VF UK/Ireland mucking about to protect the interests of VF NZ? We don't know. It may sound pretty far fetched, but that's not really the point.

Yes it's purely a speculative presumption (ever heard of that happening on an internet forum before?) but it's my presumption and I'm entitled to it, helpful or otherwise. It prompted some debate, no? All I've suggested is that perhaps, just maybe, it isn't in the interests of VF Ireland/UK to rush an agreement through. I never suggested that VFNZ are in cahoots, I'm sure they're lovely people willing to accommodate all comers. And 2D simply stating that they do not have an agreement doesn't necessarily imply that it's their decision now does it? It's just a statement of fact. And nowhere have I seen 2D admit that it's entirely their problem, quite the opposite.

If 2D do have a representative who drops by, I'd be very interested to hear what they have to say...

The lady doth protest too much methinks ;-)

Funny, if you have a look at the 2degrees facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=92843664013&topic=9869 you see responses from 2degrees along the lines of "So sorry to hear about your experience. Unfortunately Vodafone UK haven't setup their system to enable 2 way texting with us so there is not a lot that we can do from our end. "

One could be forgiven for concluding from this that 2degrees efforts have been stymied from the other end, that the ball is firmly in VF's court as it were. Or that 2D are telling bare faced porkie pies to their customers. One or the other...

I'm just waiting for Salty's reply as he'd have more idea about this than anyone else.

The fact that he hasn't made a comment probably means hes trying to sort it out... I dont know tho.

There's not really much more I can say. It is true that there is no agreement between the parties right now, and that that is the immediate cause of the issue. However it's not really appropriate for me to discuss the reasons why there is no agreement between the parties in this forum.

I wish I could tell you it would be working tomorrow, I really do. We want it sorted out as much as you do. In the meantime, our advice is still to have your overseas friends & family complain to their provider. The simple fact is that an operator is much more likely to prioritise complaints from their own customers than from some tiny little new operator in a tiny little country on the other side of the world. That's just life.

If I get some time today I might write a post or posts, since it's complicated, explaining the gory details about how an SMS gets from A to B. That may give you all some insight on the different aspects of the problem.

Cheers

In the absence of any facts, we shall continue to speculate Tongue out But this has gone on for so long now that I'm speculating that it's not straightforward and that VF are being less than accommodating.

I refer to my original post.

If you have friends, family, contacts in Ireland and UK with Vodafone, please ask them to contact their provider and ask why their SMS are not being forwarded to 2D in NZ. Better still, have them request a refund for the charges. Today in particular, VF will be making money for nothing from their Irish customers.

I will ask my own contacts what reponse they have received from VF; I'm guessing none, or they will have been told that 2D is the problem. Yawn...

Simple summary really - its wrong to implicate VFNZ have a role in any of this. But its right to ask that VF UK & Ireland customers put pressure on their provider to conclude an agreement asap.

Nothing else to see here ...

Nobody implicated VFNZ in anything; I stated that VF Ireland and UK are not forwarding SMS to 2D. This is true. Others assumed I was implying that this was somehow driven by VFNZ, which is not the case.

Let me just reassure Geekzoners that we're doing all we can to get two-way connectivty for international text messages for our customers.
Thanks to SaltyNz for his epic post on the ins-and-outs of text messaging. It might give you all some idea of how complicated the issue is to make sure it all works tickety-boo.
We've done all we can at our end from a technical point of view. Our customers can send text overseas - but we do have some international carriers who've still not enabled the functionality for their customers to send text back to our customers.
This is a number 1 issue for us. We have very regular contact with the international carriers to keep the pressure on.
We've found that it does help if the customers of the international carrier also flag it as a problem at their end. Afterall the voice of the customer is all powerful and one to be listened to and respected.

Thanks

If you have switched to 2degrees as your mobile phone provider here you may or may not be aware that txt messages originating from Vodafone Ireland/UK are not reaching 2degrees customers here in NZ. Family and friends at home are probably not aware that their messages to your 2degrees phone are not being forwarded by Vodafone Ireland (but they are still being charged nonetheless). Vodafone Ireland and Vodafone UK have likely made the decision not to facilitate txting to 2degrees to protect the interests of Vodafone New Zealand but have not advised their Irish customers that their SMS messages to 2degrees will not be delivered. (edit)

You could have easily posted the FACTS of the situation, without sprinkling your own brand of delusion / opinion into the mix.

Thanks MikeyPI, we had actually progressed past the mud slinging around VFNZ's involvement and all you have done it bring it up again.
if you read the rest of the posts it is completely agreed that there is nothing showing that VFNZ is influencing the other Vodafone carriers worldwide, but at the same time we can not stop people speculating as it is anyone right to hold an opinion be it correct or not.

The FACTS of the matter have been posted several times on these forums already, going back to last August. No resolution yet. From 2degrees post above, it sounds very much like it’s not a technical difficulty but an administrive one. It sounds very much like 2D have ticked all the boxes on this end. O2, Meteor and Three have no sister interests here, they have a two way interconnect, or whatever it’s called, with 2D. VF are the only telcom in Ireland yet to facilitate SMS to 2D. Where’s there’s a will there’s a way; I suspect a lack of will. I’m sure it’s complicated and probably boils down to $$ but it seems daft to me that, in this day and age of global exchange, an SMS message sent through a very large telecommunications company such as Vodafone completely fails to reach its destination. Obviously this reflects very badly on Vodafone Ireland (Vodafone IRELAND, not NZ, let’s just be clear before people get all defensive and righteous). Maybe NZ and 2D are so small globally that they haven’t even noticed there’s a glitch in the matrix; but I doubt it. But that’s just speculation and if you don’t agree that an internet discussion group is an appropriate medium for speculation then it’s you, pal, who are delusional.

(The moon landings were staged BTW Tongue out)
