So does this EUBA vs BUBA apply if you're on a cabinet?

I'm on a cabinet and am still getting excellent speeds during the day, but there's been a fairly noticeable change in the evening recently.

I'm on a cabinet and am still getting excellent speeds during the day, but there's been a fairly noticeable change in the evening recently.

Speeds seem okay again, but I agree it still feels like there's something going on in the evenings. Can't seem to find anything conclusive via speedtests/tracerts/measurement lab's tests to post - it mostly shows itself in occasionally being unable to connect to certain or all websites till the router/connection is reset, stuttering of speed while running speedtest, and similar things that never seem to last long enough to show up in a test.

Same kind of thing was happening back in April too, and was clear of this problem for months before the resolved? slowdown issue a couple of days ago.

Yeah I am finding Orcon Speed absolutely shocking. I have been with them for a about 3 years the first 2.5 were OK. Its my belief that currently Orcon is starting to get some serious internal problems and are looking at new options for an reliable ISP

Now in 2 locations I get about a 350 kbs download and they start dropping of at 5 pm every day then start coming back after 11 pm .
Getting unusable at times.
LOL to those that talk about streaming Youtube . I it takes about 30 mins to load a 5 minute low quality clip.

I have been going back and forth with Orcon "support" and the best they can tell me is to get a new router funny how it drops out in 2 locations about 5 km apart a the same time every day and it is my problem .

I do believe they are BS..ing me . It seems like a ISP move is about the only option that I have.

Plus their SMTP is stil today blocked by Microsoft. A problem which I talked to them about over a week ago.

Note: This may not be factually accurate but it's my best guess for why Orcon is so slow.

Any Orcon connection that is not an Orcon+ LLU connection is provided over a regulated Telecom wholesale service. So Orcon pays Telecom for use of their adsl port, the backhaul from the exchange/cabinet to their handover point at rates set by the ComCom.

Many cabinets and exchanges have been upgraded and have fibre backhaul now so the problem has moved further down the chain to the handover links from Telecom wholesale to the ISP.

It came out awhile back that the standard provisioning for handover links are 48kbit per subscriber, so if we make up some example numbers and say Orcon have 50,000 customers they might have a ~2.2Gbit/s handover link from Telecom wholesale to them for ADSL traffic.

This works fine if your customer demographics are a mix of low and high usage users, not all are active at the same. However Orcon (imo) has a demographics problem in that is has lots of high usage active customers and not many grandma and grandpa type users like Telstara and Telecom retail do.

Many heavy users on a shared link = congestion.

It's hard to see anything changing significantlyy unless Orcon can pay more for higher handover link rates or Telecom wholesale decide to increase the "standard" rate per subscriber which they already did once this year.

.. like I said this is probably not a 100% accurate description of the problem but I think it's probably pretty close given that Sounddude has said they have plenty of international capacity available.

My only problem with that argument is that I'm on a Orcon+ connection -- which has a backhaul with a 100kbps per custromer handover link. And I still have issues accessing YouTube and other bandwidth intensive sites. If your argument regarding the Telecom network was valid, I would not be seeing those issues.

And indeed I'm seeing pretty good speeds to domestic sites most of the time, it's just international sites that I have issues with. And these same sites work as expected on Telecom connections.

Ergo the issue is with Orcon's international bandwidth -- which is affecting all Orcon customes (whether or not they are served over a Telecom or LLU connection). From this thread it seems that Orcon also has localized issues -- some of which has already been resolved by the Orcon reps in this thread.

However the International bandwidth issue remains. One can blame Telecom all they like, like the quoted poster, but at the end of the day the bottleneck isn't in the ADSL network for many Orcon customers. The fact I can get 14mbits to domestic sites proves that the last mile ADSL segment isn't constrained.

I wonder if the same handover link congestion problem is affecting Orcon+. Along the way there must be a handover from FX Networks, Vector or whoever they are using to Orcon for + links.

Vodafone also uses Vector in many, if not all, exchanges for their LLU network and most other ISPs (such as Maxnet who have been cited in this thread as providing a reliable service) use Telecom Wholesale. When Orcon is the only one suffering from some the issues described in this thread, it suggests a problem in their own network...

While every provider has the same restrictions, each isp have different plans and different customer demographics.

We don't have any congestion on our LLU network. We have a ton of unused backhaul
