Ragnor: Maybe I've been lucky but in the last 4 years I've changed ISP 3x, each time because of a significant performance issue or problem that was taking too long to fix.

I've moved from Xnet to Telstraclear to Telecom with minimal downtime or hassle, each time I just contacted my new intended provider 10-15 days before the end of my existing billing period then after successful move rang to close my account with my ex provider.

I'm thinking about moving away from Telecom currently as we are out of contract and their current pricing (post the end of Big Time) isn't competitive for >40GB usage.

General unwillingness to change ISP when you're getting bad/poor service lets ISP's get away with it and encourages ISP's to continue as is imo.

It seems we have diametrically opposed viewpoints Laughing

The Orcon call centre advised me to go out and buy another router - why am I paying you for one then Orcon? Why?

Well that's a little depressing. So it suggests that the recent changes that improved things had nothing to do with customer complaints, but were a backbone for this forthcoming deal. And so much more video traffic on the lines will make congestion that much worse, I imagine.

Things have been good lately, but I can see if it turns out the lines can't handle it (and given the issues in the last six months, can't help but expect it) when this Sky thing goes active, it'll be the last straw.

Inevitable meltdown indeed...

I'm on a cabinet and my homehub is syncing at 19Mbps so maybe it was just 2 defective routers or some other issue?

havent read this whole thread, and maby slighty off topic... but eh i spose it relates to Orcon speeds..
Iv just started playing Battlefield Bad Company2 online on PC and consistantly have the lowest ping or very close to.
(i usually get between 60-70 ping depending on the server)
It dosent matter what time i use the net (peak time or whatever) it makes no difference to my ping or my download speeds...
Ill also point out my internet was unuseable when i first joined up with Orcon.
My house wiring was the problem. I now have a single grunty cable that runs from the input point on the house straight to a RJ45 wall socket, completly bypassing all other house wiring.

My internet is solid i must say.

Thanks OoO

Can I confirm you have a Siemens Homehub and not the Dynalink one? If that's the case Orcon have lied to me in writing as they have advised me this is a known issue.

I'd be very grateful - this will make my complaint much easier

Hi Gavvyb

It is a known issue, but doesn't effect everyone.

Not entirely sure why.

Yep, it's a Siemens Gigaset SX763wlan. Haven't had any issues with it.

The 7.54 Mbit sync rate issue, even when the attainable line rate was much higher.

People were seeing it on on the new Telecom Alcatel Lucent ISAM's (ie: in the cabinets) when using some modems with TI, Globalspan, Conexant and Siemens chipsets.  I think firmware updates from the modem vendor fixed many models.

Sigh...well orcon finally got back to me four days later. Thanks for the nudge Sounddude.

Regarding getting charged for local calls there is apparently two possible reasons

1) I'm dialing the "09" first or the speed dial is. Funnily enough this only seemed to happen after they forced me to change plans.  Apparently the awesome system doesn't know that I'm in Auckland and bills you if you include "09" prior to the number. Weird.  Anyway, that's not it because I manually enter numbers.

2) Or there's something wrong and they need to escalate. Which is fine...I understand. But they ask me to provide date and time of calls where i have been billed. Even though I already sent them this information.

Oh, and I never got any credit either. Weren't people here getting some credit for being shifted? He basically told me there's no chance. Annoying because I'm paying the same for 3 less gigs.

Argh! Today is the last day for telecoms double data promotion....so tempted to switch over.

Well if it is slow today I am not looking foward to Nov and the extra traffic on the Orcon Back Hauls from the IPTV offering from Sky.

I get dial up speed after about 5.30, all Orcon can say is it is my equipment, dam I have really cleever equoipment it knows to slow down and simulate lack of capacity during peak periods and to speed up again at off peak and give reasonable performance.

After more than a decade with Orcon I am close to voting with my feet and wallet going to someone else.

.

I was told by Orcon when i first got their toll service a couple of years ago that i would be charged for  local calls if they had 09 in front of the number.  This is quite common for other carriers as well except Telecom. As I had the $20 all you can eat toll plan it never worried  me but if you have fones that have CLID lookup tables based on the complete number to display names  then when you make a call with these named numbers it will always  ad 09 in front of the called number..

Anyone remember that slowdown issue those of us on EUBA had that one day on 15th Sep, 15 days ago? At the time I submitted a diagnostic report to Orcon using their diagnostic tool.
Well, I just now (30th Sept) received a reply from "Jay Patel" at Orcon, indicating that they think they have figured out what the problem *is* and that if I resubmit a new diagnostic test today they can raise a fault...
Hello?
I already know what the issue *was*, that occurred - and was solved - 15 days ago, and "Jay Patel" is just emailing me about it today? Internal communication needs some work guys.
I'd submitted several speed issues prior to the 15th, before I was put onto EUBA, so I presume it was that most recent one Patel is replying to, otherwise it looks even worse.
Unless he has been instructed by someone like Simon to recheck it to make sure it's all working right.
If that is the case, he should lose all of the standard reply form letter guff from the email and email me like a human being like Simon and Clare do.
