@AviZ
Reduction in line rate is almost certainly to do with house wiring or your phone line to the cabinet/exchange.

@nzkiwiman
Youtube shouldn't be slow now as Snap installed Google/Youtube caches, make sure you are using their dns servers.

@Ragnor the wiring from the house to the street is 10 months old even so snap want $200 to send a tech out to look at it.

You can login to the admin ui of your modem/router and check what the dns server settings are

Also you can check your pc settings in case some are manually set there

-- start menu > run > cmd > ipconfig /all

Snap would book a Chorus tech to come out and look at it, normally there is no charge unless no fault it found ie: you are only charged if they come out and find no problem.

You might want to double check your internal wiring first before booking a tech (just in case).

Do an isolation test, unplug every other device from any phone jacks apart from the modem...  reboot the modem and see what line rate you get in the admin ui.

Also can you post the line stats from your modem's admin ui?  How many phone jacks in your house, how many in use?

If you are 800m from the exchange and the exchange has ADSL2+ gear (check your address here http://www.telecomwholesale.co.nz/maps) you should really be getting a line rate >10Mbit so something seems wrong to me.

Checking DNS servers

Ragnor:

I have a Linksys WAG54G V.3 with fireware version 1.00.46
Looking for references to DNS the main one I find is under "Setup" > "DDNS"

It says DDNS Service is disabled and gives me a drop down  menu with the options DynDNS.org and TZO.com both of which I think are not correct and left overs from playing around with DNS ages ago.

Under the DHCP area it lists "Static DNS 1", "Static DNS 2" and "Static DNS 3" all of which are set to 0.0.0.0

Under "Status" > "Gateway" I think I find the real info your suggesting I check where it says:

"DNS 1: 202.37.101.1"
"DNS 2: 202.37.101.2"
"DNS 3: 0.0.0.0"

Hmm networking is something I've not paid enough attention too however is this right? When I run ipconfig /all, under "Windows IP Configuration" there is "DNS Suffix Search List : domain_not_set.invalid"
Under the Wireless LAN adapter wireless network connection it lists my DNS servers as 202.37.101.1 and 202.37.101.2 and 192.168.1.1

So, is my DNS server for Snap correct?

A couple of comments for this thread.
First, I do think that any degradation to the sync speed is Snap's problem.
After all our contracts are with then, not whoever owns the copper. I really don't like this attitude of "let's blame it on Telecom and that's it". I know it's somewhat outside of Snap's direct ownership, but after all they are who we interact with and pay to, and as that they should be interested in potential issues with their customers' lines.

And on a similar note, I've close my account today. I just wasn't getting anywhere, both with them and online.

Cheers, D
