Greetings all...I wonder if many of you are having the same issues I am with Slingshots free download period.
I am currently on the Elite Plan 40gb for $55.00 with the free download period being from 2am till 8am however as I am a bit of a night owl I tend to use this period quite frequently hence an on going issue that I intend to contact Slingshot about.
I consistantly notice that as from 1am each morning the download speeds drop  to around 50kbs,now as I get very fast downloading at other times am I thinking correct that they are slowing everyone down during the free period.
If this is so how are they allowed to do this when you are paying for a service that states full speed 24/7.
If anyone else is experiencing this issue I would be interested in hearing what responce you have got from Slingshot if you have contacted them concerning this issue

I think you will find that most people on Slingshot who want to use the Free Offpeak will que all their downloads to start at 2am. Hence why the sudden drop in speed

ADSL is provided on a best effort, and no speeds are guaranteed.

Its not necessarily "Full speed".
You CAN get up to full speed ( 8mbps for ADSL / 24 mbps for ADSL2+ ), but its not CIR. You are getting best effort. ( CIR you will be paying in the hundreds for )

The FS/FS is only saying that they dont put an artificial cap on your line like ISPs used to do.
EG 2mbps/128kbps.

Secondly. Every man & his dog are downloading during this time. (Including me)

The avaliable bandwidth is overwhelmed. (More users = less slice of the cake for everyone)

Still you are getting free data.
Dont complain ;)


NZ internet is bad compared to many countries. We have small data caps & hence why the free offpeak is so attractive.

A tip:

Dont be a night owl.
Play in the day like everyone else ;)

You won't get anywhere with this, traffic across their network is deliberately limited speed wise during off peak. You're getting free data for 6 hours a day, why on earth would you complain? Assuming you read their T&C before joining, this wouldn't come as much of a surprise to you. Read this thread for a further understanding - & specifically clause 6. Broadband Services.

Support a locally made Linux based Operating System, try Linux Lite.

Thanxs to all who have posted a reply,I must appologise as I realise I am crying over spilt milk when it comes to getting free data for 6 hours and I understand that you all too must be using this free time to consume like me as much data as you can.

FS (full speed) has been dropped and they now call is HS (High Speed).
From 1am people start bulk downloading like other have explained.
Web browsing isn't effect by this really and only bulk download services show the massive.
I also find the Slingshot torrent cache does work great when accessing popular content.

If you have problems accessing the internet (that's not related to bulk downloading) then please share what sites/services they are so we can all prod Slingshot into delivering a better service.

After 1am everything starts to get disconnected and spoofed with connection closed that they deem not important enough, not just p2p stuff.

Its cheap, I get 300 gigs a month down offpeak so I put up with it.

This is an issue for me, at the opposite end of the day.

I upgraded to a newer plan a while back. Firstly, I did not realise the free data period had changed from 1am-7am to 4am-8am (as they had no info displayed on their site), so could not work out why my data cap was being used up.

More relevantly, I like to watch streamed sports in the mornings, especially the weekends. Over time this has become more frustrating. I stayed home today to watch the final round of the US Open. Up to around 8am the maximum speed was below 15ks. After that, I was able to watch the 1050k HD stream with no interruptions. My Networx taskbar meter showed about a constant 320-350ks for the rest of the coverage.

Am thinking of changing ISPs.
