Hi There,

I am a SlingShot broadband customer.

Over last few days I noticed that our data cap is running out very fast.

We are on a 20GB Navigator plan and we are two people in our flat. The only video intensive application I use is FaceTime for about 30 minutes a day and little youtube. My flatmate watches moderate youtube.

I initially thought we are using too much of video and I requested for upgrade to 40 GB Explorer which will be effective from next billing cycle. Meanwhile, I bought 5 GB block and that ran out in no time. Yesterday I bought another 5GB block and that balance is at less than 1 GB now. This morning from my account page I saw 1.07GB. Then we switched off the modem and router and it is decreasing by 0.01 GB now. Now it stands at 0.97 GB.

I switched off the route and modem and observing the data. I will keep watch on it until evening before calling SlingShot.

Did anyone face any issue like this earlier?

Any help is appreciated.

Thank you

You're on the right track.

Having turned off the modem/router is a good move as when you check usage you'll be fairly sure whether it's a Slingshot issue or one of the machines on your network.

Generally it's most likely someone at your place has a virus/malware or has inadvertently installed some kind of peer 2 peer program on their machine.

Probably you'll need to check each machine one by one to find the problem.

Also double check the wireless settings in your modem/router in case you have some neighbours leeching off your connection.

Recommended settings are: WPA2 w/ AES encryption and for the password/psk use at least 10 characters with mix of numbers/letters/characters (non guessable).

Hi Ragnor,

Thanks for your concern.

I switched off modem since morning and the balance data was constant at 0.97 GB from this morning. This rules out Slingshot from the picture.

There is some issue at my end. Tonight I am gonna change the password of my router (I did not change the default one which comes from maufacturer. It is complex enough though.)

I decided to restrict Mac addresses at my router.

Thanks for pointing out P2P. I would have never thought about it! I will check that too.
