Hi all,

I have checked on the Telecom Wholesale Maps and a new ADSL2+ and VDSL capable cabinet has opened in my zone this month (Cabinet name: MOD/E). 

I have always been on the edge of the exchange, which results in low speeds, with not much we can do about it; but I am right in the middle of the small zone this new cabinet services.  I called Slingshot to see if they could get me switched to this cabinet, but the guy said I would lose speed due to cross talk on the cabinet and something to do with LLU (I think he was dropping that one in to be confusing?  It that that was unbundling)

Is this true or are they trying to scheme me a little, holding the cabinet spots for new users signing up maybe?  I am not too schooled on this sorta thing and it seems like a lot of you are!

Any info would be great!

SUMMARY/UPDATE:

If anyone here is having similar issues, e.g. sudden slow speeds etc. with an LLU (local loop) connection, such as Slingshot's 'The Next Big Thing' I would urge you to check the Telecom Broadband Wholesale Map here and see if you have a new cabinet within your range.

The reason for this is that an LLU connection runs back to the exchange, where your connection will run off non-Telecom (in my case it was Vodafone) gear.  When the new cabinet is installed, as it is generally closer than the exchange, its signal is stronger, degrading your signal on its way to the exchange.  In my case I was right on the edge of the exchange's range so it made a huge difference (I was getting about 0.8Mb/s after cabinetisation).

The fix for this is to get your ISP to switch you to the Telecom Wholesale network, which will probably cost you around $10 extra a month.  Slingshot helpdesk initially tried to put me off the idea (credit to freitasm and sbiddle for explanations) when I suggested it, saying things like 'Telecom Wholesale is for ISP's only'; but I eventually got a guy that agreed this was the issue and put the change into action.

The other issue I had was the switch itself, the 'man in the van' that did the switch on the 29th messed it up (porting issues apparently) so I was left with the same degraded broadband and no incoming calls!  I would say this is a rare issue but your best bet in that situation is to keep on it, call constantly...  I was promised several callbacks, and got none.  I was also told I had to wait seven more days for the porting to be fixed.  Your other approach should be to get on geekzone.  I was contacted by akia, a user here, who passed my issues on to someone from Telecom Provisioning.  I had a PM from said contact and gave the details of my issues.  Then BAM! My fix was moved up to the next day and all was excellent.

Line improvements: 
Before: 0.8Mb/s down ; 0.2Mb/s up 
After: 12.5Mb/s down ; 5Mb/s up to Sydney 
5Mb/s down ; 2Mb/s up to LA 

(at peak time)

If it wasn't for these forums and the helpful users I would've been stuck with a horrible connection for much, much longer - big thanks everyone who helped me out!

They only have equipments in the exchange. If you move to a cabinet then your service will suffer some interference. Or alternatively you would have to move to a wholesale account, which may have different costs.

On the other hand it might actually improve performance - again, at a cost.

You can't choose whether to connect to a cabinet or not - if the MPF (phoneline) that connects to your house runs back to the cabinet you'll be fed from there. If it runs back to the exchange you're fed from the exchange. Changing one house isn't possible.

If you are fed from the cabinet and are currently on a ULL connection moving to a wholesale connection will result in a much faster connection.

If you are fed from the exchange you'll stay that way and nothing will change.

Ah that makes sense, thanks for your reply.  I am not keen to pay extra, otherwise I would switch to a higher quality provider like Telecom. 

Slingshot has low speeds but they also have very low prices - we pay $80/month for phone and 25GB plus free off-peak.
Pretty cheap considering, we do a lot of streaming and we would probably go over 25GB if I wasn't able to schedule downloads for off-peak times.

I appreciate the info!

Thanks for your input too sbiddle, it is all making a bit more sense to me. I got all excited when I saw we had a cabinet close to us, we always have such average connection speeds.

It's great to have access to a forum of experts such as yourselves!

You haven't explained whether you are going to be cabinetised or not though, or whether you are on a ULL connection now.

Your comment that you are "in the middle" suggests your MPF will be migrated to the cabinet, and if you are presently on a ULL connection you will need to move to a wholesale one.

I am not sure whether I will be 'cabinetised' or not - I just noticed the new cabinet on the wholesale map, and noticed that we were well within it's coverage range. 

If you go here and switch the search bar upper tab to 'cabinet' then search MOD/E, you will see the cabinet.  We are on Landscape Rd in the middle of its coverage.

I am not sure what you mean when you say I will have to get a wholesale connection - what will that mean for me?

I am on the Slingshot 'next big thing' - which is ADSL2+ - my connection comes from the nearest exchange, for which we are on the edge of coverage.

If you want any more info just let me know...

Also, Slingshot and Callplus are the same company right?

Would Callplus, being business oriented, have a better service? Their prices seem comparably good, maybe I should consider switching? Registering it under a business would not be an issue if that is the only holdup.

Your MPF will come from the cabinet. Assuming this cabinet is infact live your speeds have propably dropped. You will need to move to a wholesale connection once the cabinet is live if you want reliable internet.

With a master filter install there is no reason why you shouldn't have sync speeds of ~16Mbps - ~18Mbps based on your location.

Wow, 16-18Mbps is a good speed, is a master filter that much better? That is the permanent wall-based filter right? I can install one myself if you think it will give me a good boost. Currently running a plug in filter to a fairly old wall jack point.

One thing I am a bit lost on is this 'wholesale connection' thing - what is the difference as compared to my current connection; and how would I arrange the move to a wholesale connection?

Thanks heaps for your responses by the way, I never get any sort of good explanations from the Slingshot team, I assume they can only give out so much... I figure our location is pretty good, that is why I've been hassling 'em about it. I will check my router stats for sync speed etc. when I get home.

I was actually under the impression that wholesale connections were what the ISP's were buying from Telecom?

Wholesale = services provided by Telecom Wholesale. If you've been cabinetised switching to wholesale services will indeed give you better performance, or at least a higher sync speed, but your costs will go up by about 10 dollars.

Finally got someone at Slingshot to agree that the new cabinet had probably caused the issue and they have added a request for me to switch to Telecom Wholesale. Should be up within the next 10 days.
I will indeed be paying a bit more but I am still getting a good price.

I will post an update for comparison - last night my speedtest was 0.79Mbps to Sydney on Speedtest.net

bener: Currently running a plug in filter to a fairly old wall jack point.

Can you just confirm that you don't have your modem plugged into the filter?

Hi there,

I certainly do have my modem plugged into the filter, along with the phone.  It is an inline filter coming off my main jack.

Although, cutting out the filter does nothing to improve my connection and a different filter also changes nothing.

UPDATE TO PREVIOUS:  Bad bad news from Slingshot, don't know how on earth I can speed this up - it's a nightmare.
After the guy at Slingshot agreed that we should be switched to Telecom Wholesale and set up a time for switch I thought all was going to be ok - but NO!  I was sorely mistaken...

We got an email on the 29th of July to say it was all done, the problem was that our internet was still crawling at (up to) 0.80Mb/s
and we now cannot recieve incoming calls.  After countless calls to Slingshot, I finally got the job escalated somewhat (they said every time someone will call - nobody did) and when I called up about ten minutes ago they said the provisioning team have a new date from Telecom to fix the issue - this time next week!!

So there seems to be nothing we can do, we have to put up with slow internet and no phone for another week, after a month of already miserable service.  Does anyone here know how I can speed this thing up?  I want to contact Telecom/Chorus but Slingshot says there is nobody I can talk to that will help the situation.

Please someone give me a suggestion!  Woe is me!
