All jackpoints will only offer ADSL connection as the POTS is basically turned off for your line.

So plugging in another phone elsewhere in the house will not work, has to feed off the Genius.

What about adding an extra jack point to feed back from the unit to the extension... I would assume that if you were to modify your home wiring so that the extension lines were independent of the incoming ADSL, then you could use them for extensions?

I have done that in the past, and it works well.

I wired an ATA into the home phone wiring and it works well. You just have to be cautious about the maximum REN (ring power) if you are running multiple phones from the one port. I am not sure what the maximum REN is on the Orcon. Each standard phone in your house should have an RN number on the back. You add each number up from each phone to get the total RN.

Folks,
I agree that we get more data with genius but DONT forget that now all your voice calls will be through your inetrnet that means they will consume data, right?
How many MBs are eaten away by a voice call of 1 hour?

They will consume data, BUT will be zero-rated, so not come off your data cap.

Depending on the codec 70 MB per hour is what I budget but it is normal for providers to zero rate IP voice. Orcon have already stated that the call data is zero rated.

What about the voice quality? will it be as good n consistent as traditional telephone line? Broadband from orcon often flickers, woundn't that impact the calling quality?

We have tested it ourselves (most Orcon staff now use this in their homes!) and we think it’s just as good as a normal phone line. Some of us even think it’s a little bit better.

These new plans are a bit unfair.

I'm currently on Purple+ with 100GB extra data (125GB total). Costs me $169/month.

On genius it would be 130GB for $155/month. Clearly better.

Except that:
a) I don't want their crappy non-gigabit router.
b) I would be forced to pay the $99 connection fee even though I've been a customer for years.

The genius plans sound good on paper, but if the genius product and/or service turns out to be rubbish you are double locked in, because not only is there a termination fee, but if you want to move back to a "phone line" based plan, there would no doubt be a fee to hook up the line again.

So I decided to move to one of the new @home plans as I had to upgrade my data allowance in any case (uni student son using a lot of data), but to move to the new plan (own modem, no new equipment involved) you have to accept a $149 early termination fee (if you cancel in the next 12 months) even though I've been a customer for years.

The original idea was that I would just change the data allowance on the old plan, and at first they said this was o.k. but then called back as apparently in my case the GB of data couldn't be changed on my old grandfathered plan. Since they had already accepted the request to change, they offered a $20 credit and moved me to the new plan instead, which is great if you don't move in the next 12 months, but doesn't go far towards the early termination fee if for some reason you do.

By the way, do these new plans mean there is no "Naked DSL" service offered?
